For those of you who haven’t seen it, here’s a post on the Dorico blog about a great new hymnal project from Crossway. The music was done entirely in Dorico.
Wonderful work! It looks truly beautiful.

@dan_kreider would the hardcover version sit on a piano enough to read from, or is the “lay-flat” version much better for this?
The hardcover sits open pretty well, but the lay-flat is really made for instrumentalists. It’s about 8% larger, with chord symbols above the staff.
This is exciting, Dan. What a worthwhile project. I’m tempted to get the spiral bound edition now, even though I am recovering from open heart surgery and probably can’t use it for weeks yet. Wish there was an e-version that could be purchased with images of each page, since that’s how I tend to work in Dorico.
Again, congrats!
Best wishes for your recovery ![]()
Thank you
Within the next few days, there will be a large repository of several thousand PDFs (lead sheets, chord charts, piano scores, hymnal scores) on singhymnal.com available for purchase.
Thanks for the heads up, Dan.
What a beautiful collection, it’s great to read about it. I was brought up in both evangelical and mainline Protestant churches, and one of my favorite things to do during long sermons was to look through the hymnals for my favorite tunes, chords, composers, etc. Just by itself the calligraphy and fonts bring back childhood memories.
Any news on this? My wife and I rent rooms from our daughter and son-in-law, and space for books is at a premium. I’d prefer PDF’s. Thanks so much, Dan.
Yes, the site is live. There are 350 titles complete out of 500, so… not quite finished.
I ordered my copy to study your work to make my own better.
I ended up ordering the spiral-bound edition, just received it over the weekend. Looks great. I hope to use it as a next step in the lengthy recovery from open heart surgery. Historically I am a traditional hymns guy, but being in churches over the years, they have given way to the predominance of contemporary songs and hymns. There are a number of them I really like. I have long since entered the traditional hymns into Dorico, but now I can do so for some of my favorite contemporary hymns. ( whispers ) : Still like traditional better. I’m a dying breed.
Anyway, thanks so much for all your efforts, Dan, and for Crossway’s too.
Ah, for the dats when we sang plainsong chants: “Of the Father’s Love Begotten”…
That one is in the hymnal, btw. ![]()
