If I create a single player in an imported XML file; the new instrument does not show up on the write page and in the play page. In SetUp it shows?

Go to Setup Mode, open the lower and left zones and select the (first) flow at the bottom.
Is the instrument enabled on the left? If not check the checkbox.

Another guess:
You are in page view, the rests in the Alphorn are real (from the import) and in Layout Options > Vertical Spacing > Staff Visibility > Hide empty staves is set to All systems.
This hides the alto recorder completely but shows the Alp(en)horn.
Edit: In post #6 James pointed it out properly: In the screenshot the full score in the right zone is selected. You have to select the flow at the bottom to see the assigned players on the left.

When you select the flow in setup mode is the missing instrument selected on the right side panel? The image you posted doesn’t show the flow selected so I can’t see what instruments are checked on the right side.

So silly… I’ve had this happen before. When the checkbox on the flow shows, and it’s a somewhat darker blue, it means the flow is not selected.
