New to Dorico (former Finale user). How do I set up a score for a single instrument (example, I want to write out a part for trumpet without piano, orchestra or band staves)
I changed your tag from “Cubase” to “Dorico” so the folks who know this stuff will see your post. I am not among them.
This playlist might be helpful, as well as the first steps:
Definitely watch videos and/or read some of the documentation provided to start as @klafkid has suggested.
Just a few screenshots to help.
File > New
You want a Single player
Search for Trumpet
This setting in Write mode determines Concert or Bb Trumpet key for input/viewing.
From there, the videos and help information will guide you through adding a Time sig (Shift-M), Key sig (Shift-K) (depending on Concert or Bb instrument view as above), then how to add notes etc.
These might be useful (from another Finale user) (whether you are doing a jazz chart or not)
Popovers:
As we are saying to all our Finale friends, please ask here if you have problems. It is a long process to learn another program and can be frustrating, but most of us have come from other software because Dorico is new so we know how difficult it can be.
Welcome to the forum — and to Dorico, @lawrenceclemens! I won’t add to the good advice and links you’ve already received, but I will add a simple comment.
I imagine this was thoughtful and deliberate on your part: I think you made a really solid choice in starting out with an unaccompanied solo instrumental piece. It will give you plenty to learn and work with inDorico, but also narrow your focus before you branch out later into ensemble pieces. (My first after moving over to D from F was a chamber orchestra piece, and in retrospect I wish in ways that it hadn’t been.)
Best wishes as you dive in!
