New update pricing for Cubase 14

So, Cubase 14 upgrade now costs £165 as opposed to the previous £85 if upgrading from 12 or £207 from earlier versions. I think this is a bad decision on Steinberg’s part, when many of us have spent large amounts on the suite i.e Wavelab, Dorico, Halion etc. Is this the plan moving forward? Is the upgrade price just going to keep increasing the older my version gets? Maybe I am missing something, but I am sure this is new. Bearing in mind apps such as Logic Pro have thus far provided free lifetime updates for £200, is it too much to ask that they keep the previous pricing structure? I am happy to pay £85 but this new model is certainly a deterrent for me moving forward. I don’t plan on leaving Cubase, but certainly don’t see this as an incentive to upgrade yearly or at least every version.

I imagine some users will be completely happy with this and eager to explain to me why this is a good thing, but this seemed a rather covert move and I didn’t see any announcements, though I could have missed them.

Yes, because there is no change in pricing for years at Steinberg.

This is the standard pricing for many years, there is no change at all. I guess you have some proof for what you say here.

Because Apple makes unbelievable amounts of money with hardware. They can easily afford lifetime licenses, Steinberg makes just software.

If you’re on Cubase 13 Pro and you want Cubase 14 Pro then what you need is the update, not the upgrade. That currently costs the same as it always has, in Euro €99.

Also, as always, upgrades can be had for 50% in a sale, i f you are willing to wait.

If that has indeed been the case for ever, then ok. I made a point to say I could be missing something.

Your point about apples pricing structure has merit, if true of course. That solely however does not equate to Steinberg’s model being value for money in this ever evolving age of music production software solutions. Fese made a point below about the 50% sale, which will be the more likely option moving forward.

Wasn’t quite sure what you said about proof either? I think my confusion may have arose from when I purchased cubase 12. If I recall they had a thing where it was the same price to upgrade 12, from versions as far back as Cubase 4. £85 at the time. As I bought 12, I then saw the 13 update for £85 and assumed £14 would again be the same. Oh well.

If true? Did you completely forget the fact that Apple sells rather expensive computers and hardware and makes all of their money from that and can afford to give away Logic updates? And they’ve been that way since day 1?

Ok buddy, slow down. I think we have acknowledged I was misinformed in terms of my initial post. I won’t get into the realm of subjectivity and/or being questioned on what I do or don’t remember. Your statement has been noted nevertheless. Thanks
