Hi all, I’m a Cubase newbie who needs some help. I purchased a Yamaha MX61 about a couple years ago because it seemed like a good standalone instrument with some computer power that I am just now looking into unlocking. The version of Cubase the instrument’s manual was written for has been out of date by I think 3 versions (from 9 to 12, iirc) but I managed to get it hooked up to my computer and to Cubase as an “audio connection” or something by just messing around with it until I figured it out.
There is something I haven’t been able to mess around with to find out though, and it has me stumped: how do I monitor the instrument with my computer headphones? I have the instrument seemingly connected just fine, but I’d like to be able to monitor it through the headphones that are plugged into my computer. Does anyone know how to help me / what I’m even talking about?
Is the USB connection sending audio to Cubase? It may (probably, I’m thinking) be only for MIDI data.
If you are using the MX61 as your ASIO audio device, you need to plug your headphones into it. It takes control in that situation.
I played around with it and found out that the USB connection is working for something to do with MIDI is the best way I can put it
If I set it up that way, it just plays a generic piano sound at an atrocious lag, and it will follow the inputs of my sustain and expression pedal. When I fixed the inputs to the instrument itself I can’t hear anything, but I do think it’s working because I saw some little bar move and some wavy looking thing do stuff… sorry for the vagueness.
I think it is, am I screwed if that’s how I set it up?
What Cubase are you using? 12? AI?
What have you selected for your device driver in this menu … ?
It’s Cubase LE AI Elements 12, and the audio system is “Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO”
Okay, that’s good. Have you tried plugging your headphones into the MX61 yet? That is your “audio interface” in this situation.
There are a few other things you will need to get a grip on, but this is a start.
You mentioned MIDI. That’s another thing you will probably end up wanting to investigate, especially if you ever want to use your keyboard to trigger VST instruments.
