HI all–pardon the newbie impatience and frustration; I’m sure many of you have felt this with every notation software product. I am trying to make a collection of brief church music selections for SSA, each section is 16 measures or less. I hoped to use the “How to create a Worksheet/Page Layout in Dorico” video to guide me. However, my Dorico doesn’t look a lot like his Dorico. The new Master Page plus button he presses seems not to exist. I floundered about a bit trying to figure a workaround, and hours later I’ve decided to ask for help. No point trying to go any further on my own; if I can’t trust the tutorial, what then?!
I appreciate your patience with me.
Sorry to hear that the difference in versions in some of the older videos is disorientating for you. Mostly you should be able to do anything shown in an older video, it’s just that the exact location of the button might have changed.
One key difference between the latest Dorico and older versions is terminology: what used to be called “master pages” are now called “page templates”.
Here are a couple of more recent suggestions to help you find your way around:
This tutorial video about designing title pages, which covers key functionality of titles and title pages
And the First Steps guide for new users, a step-by-step tutorial that’s completely up-to-date for Dorico 5.1.
As @Lillie_Harris notes, that video is from 7 years ago and uses an old version of Dorico – a lot has changed since then!
The First Steps Guide she linked to is a great place to start for understanding Dorico concepts and workflow. After that, I would suggest that you probably want to make each of your selections a separate flow in a single Dorico project. Then you can look at whether you want to make any changes to the default page templates that Dorico gives you, if you don’t like the look.
If you run into specific issues, you can always post here, and someone will help you.
Thanks to you both for such a speedy reply. I’ve already made the separate sections as individual projects and was hoping to import them as flows. Past attempts at this brought along extra blank pages I had no idea how to remove. I’ll try creating new flows in a new project and perhaps copy/paste the music data I’ve already entered. I will certainly first spend time working on the suggestions made; glad to learn about the page template terminology change!
You should absolutely be able to import existing flows into your current project.
Please feel free to post project files that you’re having trouble with, and someone here will take a look and provide you with tailored feedback. You don’t need to struggle in silence!
I had a chance this evening to apply your advice and also re-visit the tutorial now knowing the changes in terminology. I now have a satisfactory result for the simple project I was working on. I’m not sure at this point just how I got there and will need to do the same thing a few times again, but many thanks for your assistance. It’s very comforting to know that there are people who can and will help me with Dorico. Bravo to you all!
The advantage of importing your other projects as flows into your existing one is, they will take on all your layout settings (Layout Options) - you don’t need to repeat everything over again.
