Next release?

Well, I came today looking for EXACTLY this kind of thread, so I’m glad you asked the question! And we’re already well into October…

It might be delayed because of (no) store currently:

The next Dorico release was originally planned for October, but it will be delayed due to the complications arising from the closure of the online shop. There is a pipeline of other product releases queued up that are currently on hold, and that pipeline will only be unblocked once the new shop is available. Dorico will have to wait its turn as the release backlog is cleared.

The next Dorico release will be a free update for Dorico 5.x users, but it has some significant new functionality that we think will cause a decent number of people who have not yet updated from earlier versions to buy the update to Dorico 5, so we want to make sure the shop is available when the update is released.

We are taking the opportunity to continue to add more functionality to the update, so it will have even more improvements than we originally expected. I hope you will find it to have been worth the wait.

I believe this is the most specific release date pre-announcement we have ever seen from you

Thanks for letting us know. The suspense is already killing me!

now THAT’s a teaser !
Can’t wait, I’m definitely in the category of those not having updated yet from the last 4.x version due to too much focus on audio rather than notation in v5, now I’m quite curious about what’s coming !
Hope the shop issue will be resolved soon…

It wasn’t all audio: there were a lot of features in notation and productivity. If you haven’t already, it’s well worth reading the Version History to see all the fixes and improvements.
I often find that one little line saying “There is now an Option that allows X” can make a huge difference.

Talking of which, there seems to be some progress. Excellent news if so. I can imagine how frustrating this must be for Steinberg.

good lord, I’ve been making SO much use of the “tap the value twice to get dotted notes” new feature that it’s ridiculous.

I used to struggle a lot one hand on MIDI keyboard, the other on computer keyboard, and having to hunt around for the “.” key every time I had dotted values.

now it’s just “tap the numeric keyboard number twice to get a dotted value”.
LOVE it.

Amen! Mine, too!

Same here. It’s such a simple and easy solution to a common need for entering dotted notes and yet nobody thought of it before. I also often make use of the possibility in Dorico to enter a whole series of undotted notes, to select them and then simply to press ‘.’ to reder the whole passage dotted. Two brilliant time-savers!

Yes - for Baroque music, it’s an absolute life-saver. When I think about the palaver to do the same in Product B… :scream:

But I was thinking more of the times when someone asks "Can I do this?", and the answer is “No”, until you read in the Version History “There is a new checkbox in Layout Options, which lets you do this.”

Those sorts of small details can easily go unnoticed in the shadow of ‘headline’ features, but they can mean the difference between using Dorico and not; or being slightly unsatisfied with the result.

Great ideas are often obvious in hindsight!

In the Dorico blog they teased advancements in the playback algorithm for the Fall update. That doesn’t seem good for you. But for me it might be very interesting. I’m hoping for in-note-envelope options…

Very excited! But I seem cannot find the blog post, would you share the link?

“For starters, we expect the instrument editor to evolve, and we are working on further ideas to improve the expressiveness of playback, and we have something exciting up our sleeves for the second half of this year.” :eyes:

Well, it’ll still come in the second half of the year, at least!

One of the things that I hope our existing users will appreciate is that, in addition to adding one or two sparkly new things that will be exciting for many, we have also devoted significant time and attention to addressing long-standing issues in one or two functional areas that make Dorico more reliable and useful. There are rough edges in features added in earlier versions of the application that have been waiting for a long time for us to come back around to them, and we have chosen two specific areas to knock off as many of those rough edges as we can. We plan to do more work of this kind, though it’s not glamorous or sexy. But it needs your support: people often say that they would pay for an update that only contains bug fixes. If you’re still using Dorico 4 or earlier and that statement resonates with you, please put your money where your mouth is when the next update arrives.

I guess I can’t persuade you to tell us what those two areas might be? :joy:

That’s great news Daniel, glad to see you addressing refactoring and cleanup, the software is mature enough now that it’s the right time to deal with those inevitable niggling issues.

Thanks Daniel for giving us this information. I am still on Dorico 4 but I intend to buy Dorico 5. I just hope that the customization of Chord Symbols by the user gets solved (the way it is today is very complicated in my point of view - that makes me work with Finale instead of Dorico because of this). I really believe that Dorico’s future is very strong and this is a very good community to be part of.

I would suggest a quick win : the ability to hide a fermata on a single stave
