No audio or waves on export of audio mixdown

Hello, I have been trying to export my track for a few days and looking into all the forums.

I have turned off all record enables, I have turned off monitoring, my stereo outputs are formatted, my sampling rate input is set at 44.1khz and my export is set the same, as well as the 32 bit float for both input and output, I have tried wav and MP3 exports. I have even tried playing the exported file when cubase is closed and my computer is restarted. The audio plays fine from the midi file where I created it. I am exporting from a Yamaha Clavinova CP-701 Electric Piano, and I am using the cubase 14 elements demo for the time being.

Hey Bryson - welcome to the forum!

Are you saying the 2 midi tracks going to “Channel 1” route MIDI out to the CP-701 directly? How are you routing audio FROM the CP-701 into Cubase? Your Audio Connection inputs show what looks like a system-based audio device. Do you not have an actual audio interface?

I have a dual midi to single usb cord that goes from the piano directly to the computer. All the midi in the computer was sent from the CP-701 directly.

My track is complete, I just need to export as a WAV or an MP3 for mastering but when I export there are no waves on the WAV file and no sound on the WAV or the MP3.

So you hear the CP-701 “play” the midi out from Cubase play via its own built-in speakers?

yes, that is correct.

i have the IXO12 interface, but I couldn’t figure that one out.

Great, just making sure. The USB midi only carries the midi data to make the CP-701 “play.” You’ll need to bring the audio out FROM the CP-701 to an INPUT on your audio interface.

Oh so only the “notes” from the piano are transferring to cubase and not the “sound” of the notes?

Do you have any idea how I might do that?

Yeah, I’d use that instead. I just looked up the CP-701 and the USB looks like it is also for audio recording, so that may work in your favor. Let me read up on this thing.

OK, is this the CVP-701 I presume.

I could be wrong about this because I don’t know that particular unit - so take this with a grain of salt. But you MAY be able to put that guy in MIDI REC mod itself, play the Cubase midi into it, and then convert that “midi recording” on the device itself into a WAV file like this guy does:

Normally, if we treat this as any other external synth, what you would do is use MIDI from Cubase to play the piano, and take the LINE OUTS (L/R) from the CVP-701 into your IX012 LINE IN (L/R) and set those inputs up as Stereo In (just like you have with your “mic array in,” but with the IX012). Then you would record-arm the audio track to record the audio-in while the MIDI tracks are playing the piano.

That said, if Elements lets you set up an “External Instrument” in Audio Connections (I use Pro so I’m not sure if that is limited to edition) that makes it easier. You basically will build the CVP as an external instrument like this:

You basically will connect the LINE IN L/R from the audio interface as the RETURN BUS from the CVP, and “link” the midi device being what you currently have it set up as on Channel 1.

You can then save this and just load it like any instrument and actually move your midi parts to that track. That’s how I would do it if the External Instrument is available.

If not, no biggie, you just do what you’ve already done, but just set the routing for that audio track to the LINE INs on the IX012 and that should work. I don’t think you’ll want to try this with just the on-board audio device.

Does that make any sense?

Hello,

maybe I am more stupid than I thought, but for me installing my MIDI hardware synth as an external instrument does not make it be available in Export =>Audiomixdown => Stereo Out.

I assume that Cubase does not add the Audio Ins of the Audio interface to the mixdown.

For me it only works OK when I create an extra Audio Track and record what the MIDI instrument plays to that track.
That audio track will be for sure in the mixdown.

Yes, that’s how it works - exporting the audio mixdown renders all your existing tracks and, based on whatever settings you’ve used for the export, will “print” the selected tracks.

The export feature won’t take live track input and “record and export” at the same time (someone else may know some technique for that, but that’s not how I would ever do it).

Record the audio first, then mix your tracks, and then export it

If you configured your External Instrument properly and added it as a new track to your project, it should be included in your mixdown export. You have to tick the “Realtime Export” checkbox though.

Thanks for that - that was the bit I missed. @OldBigMan note I was wrong about the “won’t record and export” as @mlib points out. Thanks.
