It’s a strange thing. I updated to the latest version of Dorico (6.1) and I’m not managing to get any sound out of it.
I’ve applied the new Auto sound template.
I start a new project, piano only. (Windows 11).
I go into Play mode. Under the VST and MIDI tab, I open the Halion Sonic player. The “Concert Grand Elements” is correctly present in the first slot. I play some notes. All the level meters go up and down nicely. But no sound comes out of the computer’s speakers. Volume levels are all decent (-1dB).
On the other hand, if I open the standalone Halion Sonic player (even with Dorico still open in the background), I do get the expected sound and can play all the instruments.
But using Halionsonic (or indeed all other VST instruments, including Noteperformer, etc.) via Dorico results in no sound.
These are are my device settings (Edit > Device Setup):
Hi @Pete_the_Musician, probably uploading the Dorico Diagnostics (which you can create from menu Help>Create Diagnostics report), would help the Team to see what is going on.
Hi @Christian_R , in this case it is not necessary to have the diagnostics, since just looking at Pete’s screenshot the problem is already clear.
Hi @Pete_the_Musician , have a look on the right side of your screenshot at the Device Control Panel of the Steinberg built-in ASIO Driver. In the upper section for Output Ports there are two devices listed, Speakers and Realtek Digital Output.
Have a look at the Realtek Digital Output, it is highlighted, but you can also see a little x-mark in front of the name. That means all the audio of Dorico will get streamed to that digital ouput and hence you don’t hear anything.
Therefore, click in front of the Speakers list entry in order that that becomes x-marked. Then sound will come out of your speakers
Still no sound, though The fact is, my speakers are connected to the computer with optical fibre cable, so I think normally “digital output” is what I use.
I any case, I put the X next to the Speakers entry and there’s still no sound (but I double-checked again that the exact same setup in Halion Sonic standalone player is working fine).
Buy why should that be? Windows audio is so frustrating at times! There’s always some screen you haven’t checked!
Still, all is well. But perhaps Dorico should make sure that Halion Sonic is not muted if it is launched? I don’t know who is supposed to be in charge of that setting…
Hi, that’s more than weird. Looks like all set up nicely.
But how about the Realtek UI? If you click there on the left bottom side the Device Advanced Settings button, I dont’ know how it looks like there, but is there anywhere an option ticked which says something like “Allow apps to exclusively access device”?
And in the Device Setup dialog, do you have more drivers in the list? Maybe still the old predecessor of the new Steinberg driver, that is the Generic Low Latency ASIO driver.
Maybe you also want to check with ASIO4All or FlexASIO…
Hi @Pete_the_Musician , sorry, I’ve overlooked your last message, I don’t know how that could happen.
But anyway, though that item in the Windows mixer settings is called HALionSonic, actually it is the VSTAudioEngine (which actually has loaded HALion Sonic) and therefore the renaming took place.
I don’t know who is responsible on the Windows side? I’d say it’s Windows or the user itself. Imagine every audio app would switch around with the Windows mixer settings to their liking, I think it would end up in a mess. Well, I guess not when really every audio app does it, but as soon as you have one or two that don’t, then I don’t want to be the one to untangle everything again.
