No Sound from MIDI Keyboard or Playback in Dorico

Hello,

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m using a 3-octave MIDI keyboard for note input. It successfully enters notes into the score, but I’m not hearing any sound during input, and playback is also completely silent.

I can’t imagine I’m the first person to encounter this, so I suspect I may be overlooking something simple. I’ve attached a screenshot in case it provides any helpful clues.

I would really love to get back to writing music instead of troubleshooting issues I don’t fully understand. Any guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Connie

Thanks, Connie

P.S. I am able to input from my keyboard on projects that have been updated to Version 6. I can also playback using the “P”. But still no luck in creating a project and trying to input notation.

Hi @Connie_Stauffer ,
could you please do following:

  • Create a new project from piano template
  • Enter a handful of arbitrary notes
  • From Dorico’s main menu invoke Help > Create Diagnostic Report
  • The corresponding zip file please attach to a reply here

Then from the contained logs and things I can give further advise.

Here goes! It’s been a day away from home, so I just now got this. Thanks for your help. Connie

Hi Connie,
thanks for the data, but I’m still quite puzzled and wonder why no sound comes with you.
What if you create again a new piano project and enter a few notes? If you switch on the Metronome, does that one produce sound when you start playback?
And if you open the HALion Sonic editor window, does that show that a piano patch got loaded?
Do you know how to open that?

As for the HALion Sonic, I can’t see that anything is going on there. I still get this rascally notice:

Thanks for your willingness to unravel this.

Could it be that it is the issue as described in this knowledgebase article? Please follow those instructions and see how it goes.

Ulf

I think the problem is somewhat fixed. This is what I did.

I opened “Playback Template” under “Play” on top options. I recognized “HALion Sonic Selection”, and highlighted it then clicked “Apply and Close”. Viola! Sound has returned and the MIDI keyboard plays as I input notes. I can’t say the problem is solved though.

I tested it on a new project. No sound. I went through the same steps and had sound again. Before Dorico 6, I didn’t have to do anything to have the audio engine (I’m guessing here). The “HAlion Sonic” screenshot above always shows up when I start up.

Now I get this notice when I start up. And it won’t load Dorico.

I tried another project and it reacted differently. I do not think the problem is solved. This time, the “Playback Template” was meaningless and the program stopped. This is a screenshot of what happened next:

Hi Connie, could you please post a new diagnostic report so that I can see and analyse the crash dumps. Thank you very much

These are the warnings I get now when I try to load Dorico. I wasn’t able to run a diagnostic, but I looked at the one that was on my desktop and it gives this date and time. I’m attaching it. Would it be a good idea to delete Dorico and reinstall?

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.5 MB)

I have switched this conversation to my MacBook and have no access to anything on my PC. After sending this last file, my computer froze. I tried to start it up, but I’ll have to have my husband see why it isn’t starting. It said something like “No HDMI . . .” and then turned off again. It’s out of my league now.

FYI:
HDMI is a connection between a computer and a video device (like an external monitor). Hope your significant other can get it straightened out for you.

My husband has rebooted the PC. I still have the problems. We both wonder if we should just delete Dorico and reinstall. If we do that, and I pull up a project I started to create on Dorico 6, will old problems return?

I was able to open a file that has been my test file. If I go to Play>Playback Temple> Show All Factory and select HALion Sonic Selection, I have sound again. I have not tried to do anything beyond test the sound.

Thanks, Connie

Reinstalling Dorico is rarely the solution to sound problems.

Have you checked through this troubleshooting tutorial…?
Troubleshooting playback in Dorico | Windows version
It might help.

Thanks, Janus. I have watched the video you suggested. I checked things out as I watched. This was very instructive. I still won’t check “solution” until I’m able to move about freely again.

I appreciate your suggestion.

Connie

I went through this video a couple of times and it was extremely helpful. I believe the problem is solved. It doesn’t seem to load as trouble-free as it did before the update, but I think it’s okay. Thanks for your help.

Connie

Hi @Connie_Stauffer , I also had a look at your latest diagnostics and the contained crash dump. The crash was actually caused by HALion Sonic. At the same time I realized that though you have the latest Dorico version, but are still on a slightly outdated HALion Sonic. You have HALion Sonic 7.1.0 whereas 7.1.51 is already available. So please go to the Steinberg Download Assistant, go to the Dorico 6 Pro area and there click the Install or Install again button for the HALion Sonic 7.1.51 - Instrument item.

All is well. It appears things are working as before the V6 update. Thank you so much for helping me. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve had to do. All the videos, etc. have helped me a ton. It’s a good day.

Best wishes -

Connie

Thanks for that information. I updated and used the program last night with no issues. I’m so grateful for your help. I learned more in studying the items I was pointed to than the issue at hand, so it was very instructive time. The Forum is an amazing resource.

Have a great day!
