No sound from video

Hi all,
I have the feeling this is something stupidly easy, but I can’t get the sound of attached video to play. I’ve tried this for different projects, different video files, rebooting the computer, etc, but no luck on any of them, so I suspect it’s some setting somewhere that I can’t find.
For illustration, here attached is a 1s project with a 1s video, created from another Dorico project. I converted the latter to mp4, and when I attach that to the project, the video image displays, but no sound. There’s no ‘response’ for the video in the mixer either.

Any help appreciated!

Hi Justus, you have posted a Dorico project file but the actual video file is external and to be found at

If you could upload that instead, or post a link to a sharing site like DropBox, WeTransfer, etc.

Also, you are aware that Dorico does not support any kind of video format?

Hi Ulf. Yes, I did that, but it then embeds that video in the message. Although it doesn’t actuallly play, apparently. I’ll try again herewith…

Ok, same result.

Here is a Dropbox link:

On your other question: yes, I’ve tried a few different formats. Dorico often says “can’t open this file”. I’m actually not even interested in the video, I just want to embed an existing audio into my Dorico project. If there is a particular conversion tool that is known to work, I’d be interested!

Oh, man, even Dropbox link doesn’t work…

I’m trying with quotes, now…

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/h2x9swa0jwfp12qe1z5qa/Untitled-Project-1-Flow-1.mp4?rlkey=5fz0exhd7mduewkz3z5bem98v&dl=0

Okay, that worked now, I could download.
And if I attach it to a project then the video plays fine but not the audio because it is AC-3 encoded. This is what MediaInfo shows about your video file:

Audio wise Dorico only supports WAV and MP3.

Ok, thanks for that, Ulf. I’ll keep exploring options. I’ve had no luck with ffmpeg so far.

Oh, the irony, in this example I just try to import Dorico into Dorico…

This is doing my head in a bit.

If I convert it with an mp3 codec (using ffmpeg), Dorico says “video file not supported”…

Give VLC media player a try (I think that one also uses ffmpeg in the background).
In older forum posts I read that some folks use VLC to create videos out of wave files.

Here some more possibilities are listed.

Both MOVAVI and VLC produce the same result: “Video Format Not Supported” when trying to attach into Dorico.

MP4 is just a container, that means it can contain videos of different encodings.
But we don’t support any encoding in Dorico, make sure it is either H263 or H264 for MP4.
Here is a matrix of what is supported in our products.

Thanks for trying to make it work, Ulf.

If I convert it with H264 Video codec and MP3 Audio codec, it does attach into Dorico, but still… no sound.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/io240h68xikin5whkm3df/H264_MP3.mp4?rlkey=fdzsflx6i7mrd7pz88zl1n8gb&dl=0

And I try the combination H264 + mp3 from VLC (which according to the table you indicated should work), I get “video format not supported” from Dorico.

I myself never did something like that before, so I don’t know, is there any more settings for H264 you can adjust. MediaInfo says that the video stream is now AVC(Main@L2). There are even variations in AVC that we don’t all support. I’m not a video guy so can’t tell any details, but looks like L2 stands for Level 2. Is there any option to just do Level 1?

No, nothing obvious in VLC that I could try. And of course I tried 3 others. It’s annoying, because I’m not even interested in the video.

Anyway, thanks for trying. I had hoped it was a simple setting somewhere I needed to change.

Since you are not interested in the video, try to just take a single picture and encode that together with the audio into a video. I think that is the way people work with it

That also doesn’t produce audio. I do feel we’re looking in the wrong direction alltogether. If I may be so bold, is there an existing demo file I could download, to see if I can make it work with “approved” files. Just to rule out it has anything to do with the file formatting (because so far I haven’t been able to make it work with any file).

Hi Justus,
I also installed VLC but the exported video from there also did not work for me, but ShotCut did. ShotCut is also open source and can be downloaded for free.
Please see this older thread with a short description of what needs to be done. Following that I could produce a video file with a still picture and my own sound track, and I could attach it in Dorico.

Success! Gosh, that was a bit of a mission (ShotCut is not exactly intuitive either).

Thank you for your patience, Ulf!
