Hi there
I am a crossgrader and installed dorico 5 a few days ago, MacOS Sonoma 14.6.
unfortunately i get no audio, even though i see level changes in the mixer. I also looked into the audio settings, everything seems to be fine (HALion Sonic, MIDI from external keyboard is working). thank you, Daniel
Welcome! I’m sure we can get this sorted.
If you click on the piano keyboard in the HALion VST window; does that sound?
Do you get no audio playing on your MIDI Keyboard (with a staff selected)?
Has it always been like this?
Can you supply a sample document? If it works for me, or others, then it’s likely a setup or installation issue.
What often happens is that you open a new VST instrument in the VST and Midi rack (Play mode left window right column) but that you forget to link it to the actual instrument in the track inspector (Play mode left window, fully to the left). Check if you see the VST instrument under Routing in the track inspector.
I had the same problem. There is a No Sound FAQ on the Steinberg web site. I followed the steps and the sound came on.
You could try “Reapplying the Playback Template”, – Play menu > Playback Template, which resets the chosen sample libraries, vsts, and expression maps.
This might be a possible solution. If this fails at first with Sonoma 14.6, update your Mac to Sonoma 14.6.1.
- Click Dorico menu on the top left corner of the screen and click → Preferences (Cmd+,):
-
Then click “Play” and scroll all the way down:
-
Click on “Audio Device Setup…” and click “Device Control Panel”:
-
You see that “Output: MacBook Pro Speakers” checkbox is empty. (or External Headphones, if you have them plugged in to the headphone port):
-
Click the box on “Output: MacBook Pro Speakers” and click Close:
-
You can now see the Audio Output working properly and can close this box:
-
Close the Preferences dialog by clicking “Close” on that, too. Problem solved.
Very good suggestion, @hannuala . Most likely that is the solution.
Just one thing I’d like to mention: You can get to the Device Setup dialog also more quickly via the menu with Edit > Device Setup. This just as a side note.
Hi everyone! I had the same problem, sometimes also coming up in Cubase. There I knew I had to check the Audio setup. Being new to Dorico I had no idea where to find these settings. Thanks for your help, after one hour of reading posts, trashing some software and reinstalling a few times, THIS was THE solution. Thanks very much!
Thank you, @hannuala, it worked.
I didn’t see the “Device Setup” section in the “Preferences” window because I didn’t scroll down…
If everything launches without complaint, then reinstalling is a largely over-rated ‘repair’. You can try installing a second time, just to check, but re-re-reinstalling isn’t going to make it install harder or deeper.
Installation issues are things like missing files – e.g. fonts, or audio sample files.
Most other problems tend to be configuration issues. (This is generally true for software, rather than Dorico-specific.)
Another side note. If you want to use a device like an audio interface, make sure it is on and connected to your Mac or PC before starting Dorico otherwise your device might not be in the device pulldown list shown further up in this thread. Closing and opening Dorico is often the only solution to find a device which you connected while Dorico was running. This is also valid for headphones.
Build in speakers are in general available however. I never had an empty device window as shown above on my MBP.
Had the same problem with the recent update: No starting possible due to lack of finding the audio driver (or something like that). Reinstalled once and all good so far.
