No sound in drum playback

I am encountering a strange drum playback issue in Dorico 6.2. The source material came from a MIDI import.

I have attached a minimal test file (4 bars).

The drum set displays correctly, but produces no sound in playback. Exporting MIDI also results in no data for the drum track. Drum notes appear as ‘Note (Up-stem voice 1)’ instead of showing pitch (e.g. C2), and produce no playback or MIDI export.

However, if I select the drum staff and play via MIDI keyboard, I do hear drum sounds, so the VST and routing seem to be working.

I have tried:

  • Reapplying playback templates (NotePerformer and Dorico default)

  • Switching to Silence and back

  • Creating a new Drum Set and entering fresh notes

  • Checking percussion maps and routing

  • Ensuring “Suppress playback” is off

None of this resolves the issue.

It seems Dorico is not treating the written notes as playback events.

Has anyone seen this before?

Dorico file is here if anybody is interested in looking at it:

I checked your file and confirm that there is no sound although the setup and percussion map are correct as far as I can see. (PS I think the drop box link is empty now but yesterday it worked)

There is something weird however with your file. Maybe it is related to there active playback template. I noticed that when you link the Groove Agent SE to the instruments instead of the main drum set you do get sound but only the HH also for the kick drum notes.

To avoid a lot of troubleshooting it is probably fastest to just create a new project and start with a basic drum set in the setup, load Groove Agent and add the percussion map. I just did that and all works fine. Once that works you can add your other instruments and import the notes already written.

Thanks for taking a look and confirming.

I have updated the Dropbox link, so it should be accessible again.

I was able to get everything working in a new project, which I used for playback/export. I kept the original file for engraving, as that part of the score is intact.

Given this behavior, it seems the issue is tied to how the percussion data was interpreted on import rather than the playback template or routing.

Going forward, I will likely do a quick cleanup of percussion MIDI in a DAW before importing into Dorico to avoid this kind of issue.

Thanks again for your help.
