No upgradeable license when upgrading from Dorico 3.5 to Dorico 5

I had Dorico 3.5 pro (education discount if that’s relevant) for a while, and then I bought the upgrade to Dorico 5 pro during the sale. I’ve been using D5 for a couple weeks, but I got an email telling me to verify my pending license. (I remembered having trouble with it when I first updated, but I forgot about it since D5 was working.)

So, I follow all the steps (I think) but it tells me there is no license available that can be upgraded by the upgrade license I put in.

Additionally, when I run Steinberg Activation Manager’s “Grace Period Check,” it just says there was an error.

My grace period expires February, so I would love to have this sorted before then.

Welcome to the forum, Joshua.

I’ve had a bit of a poke around your accounts, and it looks like you have either registered the eLicenser with your Dorico 3.5 license on to another Steinberg ID, or you perhaps forgot to register that eLicenser so that it appears in your account.

That shouldn’t matter, provided you still have access either to the USB-eLicenser on which your Dorico 3.5 license is located (if you were using the USB-eLicenser), or if you were using the Soft-eLicenser, access to the computer on which you installed and activated Dorico 3.5.

Assuming you have access to that computer, you should run Steinberg Activation Manager on that computer, signing in with your current Steinberg ID, and enter your Dorico Pro 5 update Download Activation Code on there again. It should then be able to find your Dorico 3.5 license and correctly upgrade it, which should make your Dorico 5 license permanently activated.

Thank you. I forgot about the other computer! Unfortunately, it is in bad shape, so its abilities are quite limited.

I Logged into SAM, clicked activate on the Dorico 5 button, and put the code in the eLicenser on the old computer, but I got the same “no upgradeable license found” message. I ran the Grace Period check on the old computer, but it also says no licenses found.

I also noticed the eLicenser Control Center on the old computer only lists Dorico SE in my licenses. My current computer lists, “Dorico Pro 3.5 Educational (Grace Period Eligible)” and, if I remember correctly, I never bought Dorico SE.

I’m not sure how much of the difficulty is because of the poor condition of my old computer. So, I wonder if there is some way to move whatever I need to move to my current computer and finish dealing with it there. (To that end, I did the “Register all eLicensers at MySteinberg” option in the eLicenser Control Center on my old PC, but I’m not sure what exactly that accomplishes.)

Aha, so the issue seems to be that you are eligible for a grace period update to Dorico 5. On the computer where the Dorico Pro 3.5 Educational (Grace Period Eligible) license appears, run Steinberg Activation Manager and try the Grace Period Check menu item.

If you are eligible for a grace period update, then you didn’t need to purchase a Dorico 5 update at all, and you will be able to contact our online shop partner FastSpring for a refund.

OK, so I ran the Grace period check, and this time it said I could update. Hooray! It says I can update to Dorico Pro 4 for free. That’s awesome, but I was aiming for Dorico Pro 5. Do I need to do the D4 upgrade first?

Take the grace period update to Dorico Pro 4. Return the Dorico Pro 3.5 to 5 update. Buy a Dorico Pro 4 to 5 update.

I’m not completely sure, but I believe when you activate your Dorico 4 update, it will automatically become a Dorico 5 update.

If it does, then @pianomanwatts is in a better position than I thought. Certainly, the right thing to do is claim the grace period update first, then see what licence is in Steinberg Activation Manager. The Dorico 3.5 to 5 upgrade must be returned, as it cannot be used in the circumstances.

Best case scenario! I did the free Dorico 4 update, and it automatically became a Dorico 5 update. The Activation manager now says Dorico 5 is activated. I believe that means everything is sorted. Thank you!

P.S. I can return the upgrade I purchased, right? How do I do that?

Yes, you can indeed get a refund for the update you’ve bought but don’t need. Please contact FastSpring’s support team:

I just bought the upgrade from 3.5 pro to 5 Elements and I too am having the same ‘no licence to upgrade’ message.
3.5 is running on my new computer and the licence is visible in the soft licencer, but obviously not to the Steinberg manager. I do not have Dorico on my iLok. Perhaps, over the years, I have accidentally opened a second Steinberg ID. My old computer is long gone. How to I reconcile these issues?

I am not sure there is an upgrade path from a Pro version (in your case, 3.5) to an Elements version. It is Elements v5 you are wanting? if so, AFAIK you would purchase it.

Well, they took my money. The upgrade path was there on the page and they didn’t ask for proof of purchase, so I’m hoping I can solve this issue or get a refund. I was kinda hoping paying for an upgrade would solve all my problems with Steinberg’s Byzantine licensing and activation schemes but I think I just stepped in it deeper. Maybe I can get someone on the phone to iron out the issues.

Then I presume you get an Activation code, use the Steinberg Download Assistant program (enter the code, top left), and download from that window.
Normally the activation processes all work well, any exceptions then someone from the team can check for you personally and resolve it with you. You can report/ask if you have problems here at the forum as the Dorico/Steinberg team view threads and posts regularly.
