Noise gate plug-in

I’m trying to apply the noise gate plug-in to a vocal track in order to eliminate the breathing sounds.
I’ve got it set for the noise gate’s lead vocal preset.
The problem is that the noise gate is also eliminating a number of the softer words/notes being sung. I’ve tried increasing/decreasing the noise gate’s threshold setting, but since the softer words/notes are apparently about as loud as the breathing sounds, it really hasn’t worked to fix the problem.
Anyone have any suggestions?

A noise gate is not a good solution to that problem.

You would be better to edit by hand, you could speed up the initial cutting by using detect silence, then trim by hand to perfection!
