Non-aligned fermatas

I want to write this;

and I get, using the fermata function;

Can the fermata over the rest be placed on the C ‘automatically’ or do I need to adjust that in Engrave mode at the end, when the final width and placement of notes are set?

Grab the fermata above the rest and move it above the half note! When you invoked the fermata, had this half note been selected (or the caret there) you would have had this result directly. Everything in write mode, of course.
