Noob Help/Q's

Hi, just switched to Dorico from Musescore (previously Finale).

I’m having trouble finding a few things. If anyone has insight on:

EDIT: Remaining unsolved:

5-portamentos to and from a note dont play. The first one plays, then the second is not, and in addition the second target note is played staccato, even under a slur.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum.

You can unlink/re-link and ungroup/re-group dynamics using the context menu right-click>Dynamics…

There are numerous options around for controlling the appearance of dynamics (Library>Engraving Options>Dynamics)

Everyone has their own preference for how to handle dynamics, and you will find many threads discussing this topic.

This fixed point 2, thanks!

There are numerous options around for controlling the appearance of dynamics (Library>Engraving Options>Dynamics)

I had a look at this menu. It has some other settings I needed (like breaking up continuous hairpins by default, thanks), but doesnt help with custom markings, unfortunately. For example, I don’t use the letter “n” for silence.

There must at least be a workaround way… perhaps by putting a custom graphic or text into the score, and hiding the default dynamic…?

Thanks for the welcome! :grinning:

As with almost everything in Dorico you can set a global option (Engraving Options…)

And you can over-ride that option on a case-by-case basis using the lower properties panel…

Right, but I don’t use either of those two options to indicate silence.

Moreover, I need a couple of other marks, for a couple other situations, other than silence.

Unfortunately, I’ve discovered that neither the “ungroup” or “unlink” options (no idea what the difference is) will detache a dynamic mark from a following hairpin. It’ll treat those first two as a single item, and any size or other modifications effect the pair.

Anyone know how to fix this?

That is simply untrue.

(FYI Dynamics within one stave can be grouped. Dynamics across multiple staves can be linked. Grouping is horizontal, Linking is vertical)

That is simply untrue.

What I described is simply what happens.

The dynamic letter and following hairpin cant be selected individually/separately.

Neither ungroup, nor ‘remove from group’ changes this.

I need to change the size of only the letter/be able to select only the letter.

Thanks, that clarifies that!

If you have an immediate dynamic followed by a hairpin (or vice versa) and you select one and the other turns blue, they are grouped. If you select one and the other doesn’t do anything, they are not grouped. In fact, if you select any dynamic in a stave and another turns blue then they are grouped together.

If you understand what I mean and are suggesting that this is not happening in your project, feel free to upload a small version of it for us to see.

Linked dynamics are between different staves e.g. four trumpet parts playing mf can have a linked mf. If they’re linked and you change one to f, they all change to f.

Thanks Daniel. I’ll upload it in a few. (edit: looks like that’s unnecessary, as it’s been confirmed by Janus that the ‘n’ dynamic symbol can’t be unlinked from the hairpin)

Quick question:
-How to auto-quote the post im replying to on this forum? I cant seem to find a button for it.

Because n (niente) cannot be entered as a dynamic on its own. It is just a property of a gradual dynamic.

I’m talking about changing what the notation looks like, not what it does inside the programs playback programming etc. For example, changing the visual size, color, whatever of the n, without changing the hairpin. Preferably, changing the dynamic marking entirely, to what I need (as opposed to a letter n, or a little harmonic circle symbol)

Edit: I’ve figured out 3 different hack/workaround ways to pull it off.
