NOT A BUG: Cubase 13: Insert effect "disappears" when not dragged correctly

  1. Create empty project
  2. Create Audio Track
  3. Add an Insert effect to the audio channel in the mixer
  4. Use your Mouse to drag the effect onto a different channel but don’t immediately drop it
  5. Drag until you see the “forbidden” circle icon which indicates you cannot drop the insert effect “here”
  6. Let go of your mouse button

What I expect to happen:

  1. Insert Effect remains unchanged in its original position

What instead happens:

  1. Insert Effect disappears and can not be restored via Edit → Undo

Meaning the insert is “lost” - all the settings you’ve done to it - gone. Undo doesn’t do anything.

To me this is a pretty significant issue as it basically results in data loss.

Video:

This is not a bug but an old feature. If you drag an insert effect anywhere to the “outside” you delete it. Many of us use this feature on a daily basis to quickly get rid of unwanted plugins. There even were request to have the same functionality for Send slots.

Good news: You can undo this action but you have to use the Mix Console undo (Alt+Z or Opt+Z by default).

It is very interesting, that many people seem not to know about the distinction between normal undo CTRL+Z / CMD+Z and mix parameter undo ALT+Z / Opt+Z in Cubase. I read it again and again in this forum.

I also did not know it for long time. I also got aware of it in this forum years ago. Couldn’t believe. This may be one of the hundreds of Cubase features people are not aware of. Then they say I can do this and that in ****, but do not know, that you can do it in Cubase too and often even better.

First of all, my apologies. I goofed on this one, for sure

Yes, indeed I remember the ALT+Z / Opt+Z combo from a tutorial years ago but then kinda forgot about it, honestly.

The truth is we spend our time in only specific parts of cubase, not realizing how vast it is. It is near impossible to remember all the functionality and keystrokes.

So looking at this issue again with that different lens, I can see how it can be useful.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Just to add an bonus info that nobody asked for: Besides the undo for the project and the undo for the MixConsole there is a third undo in Cubase. It is for zoom changes. You can undo your zoom changes independent of all edits.

My memory tells me there even is a fourth kind of undo in Cubase but I cannot remember which one that was. No, I don’t mean the long lost local undo.
