I just updated to v6.0.20. However, I’m not seeing the new option to change the positioning of multi-bar range numbers. I’m looking in the layout options, but I’m not seeing anything. Am I overlooking something? Anyone else not seeing this feature?
Why did the Dorico team say to look in the Layout Options then?
They said that the option allows you to use the Layout Options setting for the position. But the option to tell Dorico to do this is in Engraving Options. (Which is implied by the fact that this appears under the heading “Engraving improvements”.)
So, is there not a setting somewhere to position the multi-bar number range to a specific position like you can with normal bar numbers?
There is – just read that paragraph of explanation carefully.
If you change this setting to “Layout Options”, then bar number ranges will be drawn using the same “Minimum distance from staff” setting that is used for single bar numbers and that can be found in Layout Options.
So, it only allows us to change the vertical distance position and not the horizontal position as well? I’m a little confused here.
I believe that bar number ranges under multi bar rests are always positioned in the middle of the bar, directly under the bar count number.
I don’t want that, though. I’ve been currently manually moving each number range in Engrave Mode to be closer to the left barline. I shouldn’t be needing to manually move them. There should be a setting to position the number range horizontally.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that style before. Can you post an image of what you want it to look like? Do you move the rest count number over too?
This is from a clarinet part that goes along with the lead sheet I use for church. I enter the song in Dorico so I can quickly change the key if needed. Here is a picture of an example of what I’m wanting to do without having to do it manually.
Is there any publisher or style guide that recommends that placement? Or is it your own style? I suppose there’s a certain logic to centering the first number if the others are centered (like below), but I’m definitely not a fan of having the number just randomly floating in the vicinity of the first beat.
Whether hand copied or engraved, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything other than centered. I’d be curious to see if any other publishers use your style.
All of the other bar numbers are centered under the barline.
So, in the picture you posted, did you manually move the multi-bar range “35-40” yourself?
Yep, I just moved it in Engrave to center the 35 on the barline. There are over 36,000 parts on the NY Phil site. I’d be curious if any of them used that style. (Most of course don’t use any bar numbers because you had to pay the copyist extra.)
With some quick spot checking the usual suspects, the closest I could find was this style used in Elliott Carter’s Concerto for Orchestra.
The first bar number is presented around beat one, but no range depicted.
Interesting. Yeah, I just try to copy everything I see in the clarinet part. The way they have the multi-bar number range positioned, like how it is in the picture I shared, is most likely how they wanted it. I guess I just misunderstood the new feature with multi-bar number ranges. I don’t mind manually doing something in order to accomplish what I’m wanting, but I still think there should be a setting to position the multi-bar number range horizontally without dragging them.
OMG, what a fabulous resource!
Yeah, it’s great! There are obviously lots of sites for perusing scores, but outside of IMSLP and paid options like Nkoda, there aren’t nearly as many for perusing parts. I’ve checked it often for formatting issues or to see how a certain modernist technique was handled. Very cool site!
