How easy might it be to do something like this in Dorico?
I’m probably not expecting to do anything like this in Dorico in the immediate future, but I’m used to ideas floating around in my mind long before I use them. Working with Finale in 2012 it was a minor faff eased by JW plugins. The spacing is still a little less than ideal.
It’s simple in manuscript, of course.
(I’ve included the system of measured arioso that follows for comparison.)
It can be done. At rehearsal mark 94 enter your time signature as “open” in the popover. As you enter notes you’ll have rests automatically added but you can hide the rests once done. The only thing I’m not sure about is the fermata as Dorico puts fermatas in all players. You could enter it as a text item.
Or a playing technique, which I think is a little more common.
The long fermata should appear over the relevant rest in all the individual players’ parts for the orchestra, but is probably best as shown above for the two active voice parts, ie appearing just once at the top near the beginning of the recit.
How might one best do this in Dorico?
David: I use two types of fermata, one is an actual fermata chosen from the “Holds” menu, while the other is simply visual and is a playing technique.
unfortunately, the playing technique one does not affect the tempo. For that I have to add a tempo indication where the fermata is, and then hide the number and text (thankfully, Dorico makes this easy.)
For the long (square) fermata, unfortunately, I think Dorico still requires holds to follow the traditional rule of appearing over every single staff.

obviously you can create any fermata type you want as a playing technique.
I think I was just thinking in terms of what I’ve done in the past.
To be precise:
Hi! I’m working on choral scores, and I think Dorico’s handling of fermatas is quite messy. Most of the time, in condensed choral scores, we don’t need a fermata shown for every voice. The same applies to soloists. All the workarounds involving the “right” or “wrong” fermata are just annoying. Why should I have to remember which type of fermata I need to use in a particular situation? A simple Hide checkbox in the Properties panel would make this much clearer and simpler for everyone, wouldn’t it (I hope the developers will read this. 
)?
Just to add to @asherber’s suggestion. Whichever option you choose for the Engraving options, you can override for any particular fermata (in Engrave mode).
I doubt is “simple” to add a hide checkbox. (And we have an informal forum rule that suggesting anything is easy to do is disrespectful to the development team) But rest assured they read every post.
