Notation Express (Stream Deck Profile) for Dorico 6 released

The new features look very promising.

I’ve just installed it. Some of the new features are definitely nice, but it is also more sluggish than the previous version, probably because of the two-way communication. I find myself having to slow down when entering notes, as it doesn’t immediately pick up changes made on the Streamdeck.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m also hesitant to update because since it wasn’t up to date with the latest dorico, I had made my own buttons and added them like for Fill view, etc. And so I’ve made custom layouts with the buttons I use most and I don’t really have the time to install a new version and redo the layouts.

Plus I’ve made buttons to fix stuff dorico routinely screws up, like how dorico has no idea how to do enharmonics so I’ve made buttons to constantly fix doricos absolutely abhorrent handling of enharmonics.

Haha, I’ve made that one too!

@FredGUnn @Frank_Perri Nice! This is actually one of the new buttons on the new version of Notation Express XL, in the “Note Tools” folder. (See gif below)

@jsimunac Thanks for upgrading! It’s true, occasionally the new version will be ever so slightly slower. I already have a fix in place for the plugin and am testing it out, and should be able to release it soon as 4.0.1. You have mail  Can you test it out and report back if you notice an improvement?

Mine is actually a bit different as I have that button set up to respell all double accidentals, rather than spelling up or down.

The upgrade link is not working for me.

https://www.notationcentral.com/product/notation-express-xl-for-dorico/

And I can’t seem to get the upgrade pricing.

==================

I installed the upgrade, but I don’t think that worked entirely. I am missing the “green tiles”. In every case when the XL is supposed to display a green background (indicating the current state of an object), it is instead showing what I take to be a default tile that is orange with the 1 wavy staff lines.

Somewhere along the way, my StreamDeck software started failing to install updates. I have downloaded the current Elgato software and installed it manually, but maybe that fouled up the install. I’ll try to install NotationExpress again.

===================

Re-installing the profile fixed it.

@cparmerlee Thanks for your message, and I also saw the email you sent to our support. Sorry about that, we had a bad link in one spot in the Scoring Notes post. I’ve corrected it now. The correct link is:

Regarding the update pricing, ensure that you are logged into your Notation Central account, so that the correct discounted pricing is applied. Please be aware that when you add the product to your cart, the discount will not be immediately reflected, but will appear once you begin the checkout process.

@Philip_R thanks for the test version. It is indeed much faster. I can now go at almost full speed entering notes. Thanks for the fast response.

Hi Philip,
just curious, was the leaving out the end tuplet button deliberate, or an oversight? It was very convenient, but if you deliberately removed it, I would imagine there’s a reason. Thanks for all the work you put towards this. It makes my workflow much quicker.

I’m very happy to report that the problem I had with navigating to next/previous page has been solved in this version! :folded_hands:

@tmrolls That was an oversight, thanks, Tim! I will add it back in the forthcoming maintenance update.

Thanks everyone for the great comments! These are live now:

Plugin changes

The plugin (Notation Express for Dorico.streamDeckPlugin) is updated to 4.0.1. If you have multiple profiles (i.e., Notation Express Classic and Notation Express XL) you need only install the updated plugin once.

  • Performance optimizations: Significantly improved the plugin’s response times and synchronization with Dorico during rapid note entry compared with 4.0.0.

  • Connection handling: Resolved an issue where the plugin could enter a connection loop if remote devices were cleared in Dorico’s Preferences.

Profile changes

  • Stream Deck version updated to 7.3.1. Please update the Stream Deck desktop app to the latest version from Elgato if you encounter any difficulty importing the profiles.

  • The default application used for Notation Express Classic and Notation Express Keypad profiles is now Dorico 6 instead of Dorico 5, although on some setups you may still need to manually set this in Stream Deck’s Preferences > Profiles > Application (Notation Express XL was already set to use Dorico 6)

  • Classic & XL: Fixed the Mute and Open articulations (Playing Techniques) so that the highlight is shown instead of a generic icon

  • XL: Added the End tuplet button to the Notes folder

  • XL: Removed the duplicate Downbow button from the Articulations folder

I wish a bit more of a tutorial came with this.
I have yet to figure out how to create new action buttons for Dorico functions with my Stream Deck. Most of what I see when I open the interface is gibberish to me.

@Michel_Edward You shouldn’t be seeing gibberish. Have you installed the Notation Express for Dorico.streamDeckPlugin file?

We also have documentation that answers how to add your own command:

We don’t support using our plugin to add commands, but you can customize your profile to add your own commands as follows:

Adding your own key commands

If you want to add a command that isn’t already in your Notation Express profile, the easiest approach is to use a Hotkey action from the Stream Deck menu. Assign your desired key combination to the Hotkey button in Stream Deck, and program the same key combination as a custom key command in Dorico’s Preferences > Key Commands settings. This gives you full control to add any Dorico function you like.

“Where’s my favorite button?”

Notation Express includes hundreds of commands, but Dorico’s full command library is enormous — not everything can be included. If a function you use frequently isn’t in your profile, add it using the Hotkey approach described above: assign a key command in Dorico, then map that same key to a Hotkey button on your Stream Deck.

Just curious, @Philip_R: any plans to make a profile for the new SD + Classic and + XL?

That aside, I’m looking forward to upgrading to v. 6!

@judddanby I had meant to include a section about this in yesterday’s Scoring Notes post but inadvertently omitted it. I’ve just added it. Here it is:

Compatible devices by product:

  • Classic: Stream Deck MK.2 (5Ă—3), Stream Deck Mobile Pro*, Virtual Stream Deck
  • XL: Stream Deck XL (8Ă—4), Stream Deck Mobile Pro* (iPad recommended), Virtual Stream Deck
  • Keypad: Stream Deck Mobile Pro* (iOS/Android), Virtual Stream Deck

*Requires a Pro subscription or lifetime license to the Stream Deck Mobile app, purchased separately.

Notation Express is designed for the products listed above; however, if you have another Stream Deck model with buttons, the Notation Express profiles will work there as well. You may need to rearrange the buttons to fit the grid for your device. This can be done by copying and pasting buttons between profiles and organizing them as you like.

Examples include the Stream Deck Mini, Stream Deck Neo, Stream Deck + Classic, Stream Deck + XL, Stream Deck Studio, and Stream Deck Module.

Notation Express actions are not configured for touch strips, dials, or foot controllers (such as Stream Deck Pedal).

In particular, the Stream Deck + XL should work “out of the box” since it’s got a 9x4 grid — one more column then the XL. I’ll keep an eye on developments for the “Plus” features such as the touch strips and dials down the road.

Thanks, Philip. Yes, I realized there’s not current compatibility. Just wondering if I should start tucking my pennies aside for another day.

I don’t know if all users have tested all the buttons, but I’m not getting the same response as in the demo video when pressing the repeat button? XL version

@Eggi The repeat function on Notation Express works as follows: Press the Repeat button and a number (or a number and then the Repeat button). The response from Dorico should be the same as Repeat (x) pitches. For instance, pressing the Repeat button and the 3 on the Stream Deck would be the same as typing rep 3 pit in the Note Tools popover.
