Notational Improvements in Dorico 6 - Wishes

It does seem a little odd not to have an Engraving option for stem side/note side/above/below.

But instead of adjusting individually, you could select all, filter for tuplets, and change them all at once. You could even have a user script to do this.

Yes that’s how I currently do it. But it would be nice to have that as a preference from the get go.

I think I was accidentally talking at cross purposes. Alt-U also divides single notes, not merely tied ones. So we are both right (sort of) lol.

Got it. Good to know.

Bumping this feature request, because a colleague brought it up today. Because concertina dragging doesn’t also stretch, if you go too far on the compression or change your mind, you’re in for extra manual labor or having to fully reset and try again.

Well, well, well…

I think the development team has their work cut out for them until at least 2031! :upside_down_face:

I know it’s one of the untouchable, sacrilegious issues, but since the embargo on dragging notes with the mouse in Write Mode had been lifted already for a while, here we go:

I’d like to be able to use the note spacing tool (Engrave Mode) with the mouse.

There, I said it… :+1:

Agreed. It takes much much longer to move things in tiny increments with an arrow key, and coming from another notation program, it was not intuitive until I read about how to move things. I initially assumed one moved them with (in my case) a trackpad.

Hear, hear! I’ve often felt like I’m engraving with one hand tied behind my back. My mouse hand.

If you’re not already aware, holding SHIFT adjusts by 1/2 and holding ALT adjusts by 1. And you can always enter a value in the property directly. This may still not suit your preferences, but there are more options than just tiny increments.

In general, I would like to see the Engrave mode simplified quite a bit along with Engrave options and Layout Options. It would be great to have a grid based on the page size measuring system (user choice of imperial or metric units). With that, the ability of being able to simply select a frame or a system or a note or any other object without having to select the type of editing (note, frame, system, vertical spacing, horizontal spacing, etc.) that we wish to adjust. Items should be nested so that, for example, moving a frame will move all the objects in that frame in the same proportion. For example, if I click on a note in Engrave mode, I should be able to use the mouse to move it about as I see fit (and be able to turn off any non-collision constraints for that note) even if it changes pitch which would be reflected in Write mode if that were the case.

An option for vertical spacing to all be justified according to user specs. For example, I might want all systems justified to the top of the frame with the specified minimum space between systems rather than justified to the entire space of the frame. This might be useful when trying to keep frames of consistent numbers of systems at consistent position on all pages for a better visual presentation.

As far as visual presentation is concerned, I don’t particularly care for the idea of separate first page, general and flow templates because trying to get that all set consistently is not an easy task. One should simply be able to take the first page and add titles, lyricist, composer, arranger, secondary title, etc. in place with systems moving evenly among all pages automatically with mucking up the overall layout and appearance. More of a WYSIWYG approach to the Engrave mode is the easier way to say all of that???

Yes, to all! Excellent recommendations.

As a Vaughan WIlliams fan, I would ask for both!

I might also mention that there are some of us that dabble in Gregorian and other forms of ancient chant. It might be nice to have Gregorian notation options with the appropriate glyphs.

For chant notation at present, there’s this (wasn’t sure if you were aware): Cantorum - Notation Central

Thank you. Yes I am aware. It’s usable but having that type of thing built into Dorico to use standard input methods would be quite nice.

My wish for Dorico 6: to be able to select any note, or rest, or any element in the score and drag it with the mouse wherever I want.
That would be a real time saver, and would mean real freedom which at the present moment Dorico does not offer.

Can you (perhaps in a new thread) show us examples of where you are spending time wanting to move things graphically? Perhaps there’s a much easier way of going about the whole thing?

Hi @benwiggy thanks for your interest.
There are basic things I find cannot be dragged simply with the mouse, with just one click:

  • notes horizontally (!)
  • barlines
  • staff names
  • accidentals
  • text frames
These are just the ones I remember rigth now.
