Note spacing bug? + box notation layout idea

Hi All!

I have my horizontal note spacing set to default (or actually even higher than that) but notes and rests are still jumbled up in my full score:

Would love to hear more on this!

By the way, if you are wondering about the layout, I wanted to have some sort of box notation with horizontal lines in between the boxes, so I made (for each staff with box notation) a new player with a random unpitched percussion instrument and the actual instrument I was going to use. Then in the places where the boxes are not present, I would fill the unpitched percussion line with hidden notes so that the instrument would automatically change in between the unpitched percussion line and the instrument line.

I don’t know if this workaround on top of workaround kind of system messes with anything related to note spacing but I thought I would mention it.

It would help to see your project file, or a cut down version of it that demonstrates the issue.

Do you have manual system/frame breaks? In Engrave mode, what is the system fullness percentage to the right of this system?

Sorry for my late reaction!

I do have manual breaks. And yes the system fullness percentage (I didn’t know about this until now) seems pretty far over on the problematic pages:

so 171% here, 167% and 144% on some others. Could you forward me to the right settings to fix that?

The fullness percentage seems large regardless of which pages contain system or frame breaks however, so I don’t believe that is the issue

If the fullness percentage is over 100%, it’s almost certainly because you have used manual system breaks and forced more measures into a system than Dorico think will fit based on your settings. (Dorico will occasionally on its own create a system which is slightly over 100% full, but not 140%+.) When the fullness is that far over 100%, Dorico is unable to apply your various spacing settings to get things to look good, which is why you have those collisions.

I would start by doing Engrave > Format Music Frames > Reset Layout to remove all your manual breaks; you should see that Dorico gives you good results at that point. If you need to add manual breaks in specific cases, make sure you keep the system fullness percentage under 100%.

Hmmm

, I did that but I still see systems way over 100% fullness (see the video if it loads). Maybe the file is bugged. I feel a bit uncomfortable uploading my dorico file online but here is at least the diagnostics report.

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.7 MB)

It’s hard to tell what’s going on here without seeing the actual file; people on this forum upload their project files all the time in order to get things diagnosed. (The diagnostics zip file helps with issues with the application, but not issues in a particular file.)

You could save a copy of your project and use the tools under Write > Transform to change the pitches if you want, as long as the resulting file still demonstrates the issue. You could also message me the file directly (click on my avatar picture and then Message), although uploading it here would let other users help as well.
