Although the attached file is a MusicXML import, it played back correctly, including the instrument sounds, but in Halion. My preferred VST is NotePerformer (indeed I have it listed in Preferences as such), so I switched to it, in Play mode. However, both instruments now play back with a trumpet sound, and I can’t find a way to get the NP sounds back. Any advice much appreciated - especially as this is meant to be a demo - but also I would really like to know how to make NP my default player, given that I’ve already set it as my preferred one.

you need to reapply the NotePerformer playback template to make sure the sounds are correctly allocated. I’ve done that and the attached sounds as expected on my system.

by the way, to make NotePerformer your preferred playback library, go to Edit/Preferences–> Play and from there select NP as your default playback template.
Many thanks. The thing is, though, I had - many projects ago - set NP as my default playback template, and I have to say that I’d assumed that that would be the template that Dorico would apply to a new score. Maybe the fact that it was a MusicXML import had something to do with the issue?
it did sound from what you were saying that you had already set NP as default so I was a little uncertain! I’m also unsure of why if NP is definitely your default that it didn’t apply the template correctly to a MusicXML import. I also have NP set as my default and it worked fine with a MusicXML import I tried just now, correctly loading NP as expected. Did you have any other file open in Dorico? I only tested straight from initially opening Dorico.
I didn’t have another file open in Dorico, but now that I think of it I must admit that Sibelius was also running at the time. It was the source of the MusicXML file, and usually I never have both programs running at the same time, because - up to recent updates - that caused trouble with Dorico being able to access the audio engine.
Awhile back, when I first started using the (excellent) Scoring Express Chamber Music templates, they would also sound like a trumpet, no matter what the instrumentation was supposed to be. I had already selected NotePerformer as my preferred playback template.
I remember that I reapplied the playback template to NotePerformer for each of the Scoring Express files, and saved them again. Since then I haven’t had any trouble. Just now I had to do the same thing with Gareth’s file. Weird! But reapplying the NotePerformer playback template in Play mode fixed it.
yes, I suspect the audio engine couldn’t initialise correctly. I rarely use Sib. these days but in the past when I tried to run both at once, I’m pretty sure only one of them had access to the audio engine.
