Hi all! Looking for a little help to make a demo sound decent
I have an orchestral template setup, and for some reason I can’t explain a sample changed. My flute 1 started sounding like a trumpet, until it switched to a violin sample. I’m using Noteperformer - usually my experience is top notch, but i’ve bumped into this problem a few times. Going into the notperformer panel and asking to switch back to a flute sample doesn’t work either… help is much appreciated!
Regards,
Philippe
I’d advise you strongly to reapply the playback template instead of changing things manually, especially with NotePerformer!
(Just be advised this will reset all settings you have done within the NotePerformer mixer.)
Thanks Marc! Problem solved ![]()
I thought the balances did seem off! Thanks ![]()
Is something sending a program change and or bank change event(s) into NP? Maybe a button on your MIDI controller?
I’ve had that happen before, but in my case, I could correct it with the channel menu in the NP control panel. I.E. Had a stave active in Dorico, tapped a button on my controller by mistake that sends a MIDI Program Change event. Next thing I know, that stave plays the wrong sound.
To get a flute sound back, I can open the NP Control Panel and set it back to flute.
Or, select the problem stave/track and then send to it from my MIDI controller (if no controller, use a fresh temporary expression map to send it on init, once it’s up and running go back to the Note Performer expression map):
CC0=0
CC32=0
PC=3
Also, if the NP control panel somehow got ‘reset’ in a way that it looks like this:
You can either follow the instructions to load a fresh template, or send program change events into the NP instance to wake it up.
So, it’s possible to manually start a fresh NP instance as you’d load any other VSTi plugin, and then manually set it up via MIDI Bank and Program Changes. This can come in handy if there is some reason you wish to isolate some instruments to their own instance, and thus a new fader on the mixing console. Reasons? Maybe you’ve run out of slots in a NP instance and would like to add a new one without resetting the entire template. Maybe you’d like to establish some different reverb settings for different groups of instruments.
The best place I know of to get the list of Bank and Program changes is directly from your Dorico Installation. I don’t know where it goes on Apple systems, but on Windows there is an XML file that has this information at:
"%SYSTEMDRIVE%\ProgramData\Steinberg\Dorico 5\PluginPresetLibraries\NotePerformer\presets.xml"
Thanks Brian! I suspect it is something linked to my midi controller - I actually previously posted about my midi controller transposing randomly during playback, so I suspect there’s something there. Thanks for your kind and thorough response!
Phil
Was the flute the first thing (top staff) of your score? I frequently have this problem with whatever the first instrument is–usually piccolo in my case. The piccolo starts playing a trumpet sound, or some other inappropriate sample.
