Noteperformer: Snare drum vs. snare drum

When I add a drum set, I get a different snare drum sound from Noteperformer than when I add a regular snare drum.
Why is that and how can I get the drum set snare drum sound when using only a regular snare drum?

IIRC, Noteperformer has a drum set and orchestral percussion sounds. What you’re experiencing here is that the snare from the drum set is different from the snare meant to be used in orchestral percussion…

Yeah, that sure seems to be the case.

But since the “regular” snare drum sounds pretty awful to me, my question is if there’s some way to get the drum set snare drum sound for regular snare drums. Do I have to change some settings in Dorico’s Play Mode, can I do this somehow in Noteperformer? Do I have to add some playing technique, maybe? Or do I have to always start out with a drum set and use only the snare drum?

To create a snare drum player with the sound of the snare drum in a drum set, apply the NotePerformer playback template and perform the following steps in setup mode:

  1. Add a drum set player and remove all instruments from the percussion kit.
  2. Add an empty single player and drag the snare drum instrument from the drum set player to the empty player.
  3. Delete the drum set player.

Note that if you reapply the NotePerformer playback template, the sound of the snare drum player will revert to that of the orchestral snare drum.

It’s also worth remembering that you can save presets of the VST’s “status”, e.g. the instruments that NP has loaded.

So you could create a project with the Snare Drum you want; save the preset; then in any other project, add an instance of NP and load in the preset.

(If you wanted to do this often, you would save an endpoint for use in a Playback template, of course.)
