Nothing Has Changed with Steinberg - Upgrading Dorico is not Feasible

I made an attempt at updating Dorico. Didn’t work out.

Based on my absolutely wretched experiences with Steinberg’s Cubase (and UR44) I’m not the least surprised that a simple Dorico upgrade is so convoluted that it’s best for me if I don’t upgrade at all. Too bad. I actually like Dorico.

Steinberg’s hyper-confusing, bloated, and ill conceived licensing scheme is reminiscent of runny dung. Just don’t ever go there.

I suppose I was totally delusional in thinking that things have changed with Steinberg - but the reality is nothing will ever change with Steinberg’s absolutely horrible approach with software.

These kinds of comments aren’t really useful without stating what the problem is and why you’re upset.

Hi @silver_mica, if you could give more details, describing what didn’t work as expected in your updating process, I am sure it would help the Team in helping you.

I can feel your frustration from your words, but just general (and offensive) judgments will not bring you the desired solution.

The upgrade button in Dorico brings me to a webpage with 1000 choices - most of the options (software to download) have absolutely nothing to do with Dorico itself. I was wise and skipped updating (well, I wouldn’t now know even if I wanted to) - otherwise I’d fall into the Steinberg morass of horrors. I’ve been here before with other Steinberg products - never again.

If you’d like an idea on how software should be managed - have a look at Apple.

Are you on Mac or Windows?

What version of Dorico are you currently on?

There’s nothing wise about denying yourself features and fixes, particularly if you’ve paid for them.

Here the page that opens in my browser as I click on the red Upgrade button from Dorico SE’s Hub:

So it is something specific with your system.

That’s too funny. Never blame yourself right? I’ve got a video showing where Dorico’s upgrade button takes me. It’s very doubtful there’s anything nothing wrong with my system.

All the other software products I use upgrade without incident - with the exception of PTC Mathcad. PTC Mathcad is about as bad as Steinberg when it comes to licensing and upgrading. This is all due to the software company pushing rubbish out.

Yeah, sorry if this isn’t what you want to hear - but Steinberg really needs to hear this straight. Their software installation and upgrades are an absolute joke.

Can you upload your video, please? I’m sure it would be helpful.

I’m using a Mac. It is an older macOS though - Monterey.

That video is the next step for the team to see your situation.

I had a look at your account, @silver_mica, and it appears that you are already running Dorico Pro 5. Do you have multiple licenses on different Steinberg IDs?

Multiple Steinberg IDs? I don’t believe so - but, I suppose that would be something to check. I’m getting that icky feeling now.

Yes, I have Dorico Pro 5. When I open Dorico there’s a button begging me to upgrade (like a software revision or something). I clicked that Botton but nothing upgraded - I was just brought to a confusing Steinberg webpage. This is pretty typical for Steinberg.

I have an Amazon review from 2015 detailing the extremely dysfunctional Steinberg software. My review has helped Steinberg and Steinberg users - since other people had spent hours/days attempting to install the Steinberg software/hardware. If I recall correctly Steinberg wrote some sort of a fix-it utility that fixed the absolute mess created by initial installation software. This is all documented. It’s just nuts.

If you don’t mind the cursing - otherwise I’d have to add the beeps.

Now I understand the situation. You’re running Dorico 5.1.60 or earlier, and when you run Dorico, the Hub is showing you a banner to let you know that a free update to Dorico 5.1.70 is available. Depending on whether you are running Dorico 5.1.60 or Dorico 5.1.50 or earlier, the button on the right-hand side of the banner will either take you to a post on the Dorico blog telling you about the update, or it will take you to a page on the Steinberg web site where downloads are available.

You are quite right that in neither of these cases does clicking this button trigger the download or automatically apply the update. Unfortunately, as of today, Steinberg applications do not support automatic updating.

For the time being, to actually install the update, you need to do either of the following:

  • Run Steinberg Download Assistant, find Dorico Pro 5 under My Product Downloads on the left-hand side, then on the right-hand side, click the Install button next to Dorico 5.1.70 Application Installer; or
  • Go to this page on the Steinberg web site and download the Dorico 5.1.70 Application installer, then manually run it after you have downloaded it.

We know that this process is nowhere near as automated as it should be. It is something that we definitely plan to improve, but I don’t expect those words to carry much weight with you.

In the meantime, we are here to provide whatever support you need to help you navigate the installation and update process.

Login failed - I need to contact my local support team. Yup, it’s a Steinberg product. I’ve got this on video as well - no cursing this time.

I should add that the Assistant also needs updating. I feel nauseous.

I should also add that I wasn’t asked for credentials - I just tried to use the Assistant and it alone stated that there was a login fail.

It’s important to allow Steinberg Download Assistant to update itself, as you will have seen from the notice pinned to the top of the site (provided you didn’t dismiss it without reading it, of course!). The information can be found here:

You do from time to time need to sign back in to Steinberg Download Assistant and Steinberg Activation Manager, for your security. Since you are already signed in to your browser to post on the forum, you should find that simply clicking Sign In in SDA is sufficient to direct you to your web browser, which will immediately redirect you back to SDA.

I ran the assistant again and was eventually brought to a webpage to sign in.

It’s a bit difficult to describe (I have this on video) but the initial message telling me to contact support caused me to click the “contact support” button - totally distracting me. HOWEVER - if you clicked OK instead of clicking contact support another popup (behind) encourages the user to sign in. So, I’m guessing the software itself has the ability to sign in - but couldn’t so it displayed a login failed message when all it needed to do was tell the user to sign in. One of countless examples of how absolutely confusing Steinberg is. It’s a merry-go-round that I never want to ride.

Okay, so, a minor software upgrade for Dorico took about 2 hours with forum help - which is actually an improvement.

And, many thanks for the support. That is greatly appreciated.

In 2015 I nearly returned my UR44 for lack of support. I believe I was creating eTickets in an effort to use the Steinberg audio interface that I had just bought. That installation took about 24 hours to complete - with many, many of my hours spent scouring the internet for answers - just to install Steinberg software - allowing me to use the UR44. But, yeah, I’m sure it’s my system that was at fault. /s

For reference Apple updates its applications in seconds - typically.
With a single click of a button.

I’m sorry that you have had a poor experience with your UR44, and that you’ve had other difficult experiences with other products since then. You can always come here to the forum for assistance, and we will do our best to help you.

Hopefully, I’ll remember to use the Assistant from this point forward. That seems to be the way to do these things.

@silver_mica that is unfortunate that you had problems. I have done several upgrades of Dorico, Cubase, SpectraLayers, and WaveLab. They have all worked perfectly and the process has been super easy. Just use the Steinberg Download Assistant and everything is point and click.

I love Dorico, I have used nearly all of the other products on the market, even Avid’s Sibelius (and before it was owned by Avid). Sibelius is no where near as nice. I used Avid’s stuff for years and then finally came into the Steinberg family, Dorico was the entry point.

I am so happy with the software I get from Steinberg. My only complaint is the audio capture interface controls are too 1990s. The fact that all other tools I use on my Mac can automatically switch audio output to my Airpods when I pull them out and Steinberg products cannot is unfortunate. I have a work around, but it is clunky and hard to always remember to do.
