NPPE and CS Solo Strings timing issues

Anyone encounter this issue? Have any solutions?

Haven’t changed any settings, just default loaded up NPPE for Cinematic Studio series.

Hi @Codester , and welcome back to the Forum. I cannot reproduce your issue. Here an example with CSSS on my system. How does your Played Durations view look like? (eventually select the notes and menu Play/Reset Playback Overrides?):

are you using NPPE? or just your own expression map for CSSS?

if you’re using your own expression map…can i please steal it from you? i was trying to work out an expression map for it but ran into some problems as I’m new to that whole thing.

I am using NPPE.
@codester It looks like your notes are not overlapping properly for the legato…

your example

vs
my example

well in fairness i am using the trial version, although i doubt that would make a difference

weird. all i did was notate them like normal. not sure why i’d have to fudge anything. do you find yourself having to do this?

The overlapping is taken care automatically by the Expression Map-> Playback Overrides section:

Did you change/edit the expression map for Note Performer?

Try reapplying the Note Performer Playback Template.

nope never changed that

Noteperformer is my default playback, and when i open up NPPE it’s using the noteperformer playback template.

what’s weird is it only seems to do it if the cello is by itself…so maybe it’s not a big deal. though i swear i hear moments where instruments end up off time sometimes.

i can’t upload my capture because it’s too big, but the cello is in time for the rest of the work. idk…

it’s still a problem…any way i can manually “nudge” the notes or something? I tried moving them a bit but it seems dorico won’t let me

it sounds like the viola is swung

if it’s because i’m running trial mode instead of the purchased mode, i’m okay with that–i had planned to purchase soon. but if it sounds like this on the full version i don’t think i want to spend my money.

@Codester
Can you share your project so that someone can diagnose the problem?

I don’t think that it is because of the trial.

Again I see and hear no problem on my try with CSSS and NPPE (I putted the vn2. to mf to hear it against the viola…, sorry for that):

And again the Played duration that overlap during the slur (differently as what I see in your example, where the played durations are shorter that the written durations): did you try to select all and choose menu Play->Reset Playback Overrides?

my example:

your example: you can see that the played durations are shorter that the written durations, but they should be longer, 105% is the default legato length:

Espresso Fugue Quartet NPPE Experiment Voices.dorico (1.4 MB)
here’s the dorico project. i selected all notes and hit reset playback overrides

ignore the dynamics and hairpins and stuff…i’m experimenting with getting certain instruments to be louder for a “mockup” of sorts

i wonder if i need to reinstall the playback engine or reinstall CSSS or something?

i just experimented by making the played durations shorter than the written durations (i know that’s not what you told me to do!) and now it’s in time

Here what I hear opening your project, with no adjustments (now the played durations overlap properly inside the slurs):

In you last video, the notes are no more legato, but detached…

I don’t know why in your system it sounds humpy in some places (before your shortened the played durations). Maybe someone has an idea…?

well if you’re opening the project and the timing is fine on your end, it seems likely it’s an issue with the trial.

other things I’ve tried: different audio driver (i’ve tried all of them available to me), restarting everything of course.

@Codester
One thing you can try (not sure if it has any effect), since you said that you tried something with the expression map, is to recall the expression map of every instrument from the track inspector…:

…and click on Reset to Library Defaults for each instrument (in case some track inherited some other edited Expression map on your system…):

Also you are using the Trial of Dorico right?
Did you also updated Note Performer and the engines to the last version?

Did you tried also with the Steinberg Built-in ASIO driver?

yeah that’s what i’m currently using

if i change the mix to “close-main-ambient” in NPPE it seems to be in time. i think it sounds better, too! cello is less harsh and erratic. i initially had issues but i think it was just loading.

woooow i just realized i misspoke when i wrote this thread!!

I’m using cinesamples solo strings, not cinematic studio…oof.

still thanks for all your help Christian
