First, this is not the first time I lost hours of work after my N13 upgrade. I’ve lost a full day’s work after an 8-hour session with many manual saves as my default reflex. When shutting off the computer, I noticed the project crashed when the computer was idle. I didn’t care as I manually saved it many times before leaving the project. But when I opened it today I was shocked to see that the project opened as I started in the noon. And there are no backup files or anything left from the nighttime.
I’m getting pissed off about getting more and more problems with the updates on an “Industry Standard” software. I don’t remember I lost any projects or anything when working on the 2012 Macmini and Cubase 9-10 with shitloads of stupid plugins.
There is no fancy hardware or complicated software entangled in my system. It’s just an up-to-date Mac connected to an interface. I keep everything as minimal as it’s possible to create the most stable workflow. It’s known that N13 constantly crushes on export but it’s the first time it fucked up on idle.
I just want to thank to people who invested in eye-bleeding non-essential retrogressive development rather than improving stability.
So sorry that you lost an entire day of work, that sucks for sure.
I hate to state the Obvious, but did you BACK UP the entire session before finishing up for the night, on a DIFFERENT HARD DRIVE? And verified the backup before shutting down the computer?
Live and learn.
Also, can you post your exact system specifications, and which type of separate audio drive / project drive you are using? thanks.
Yeah, you need a dedicated external drive for your project data. Standard procedure.
I follow the Producers & Engineers Wing of NARAS (Grammy people) and their recommendations both for keeping backups and deliverables:
THREE (3) copies of your sessions at all times. Preferable two in the same format (hard drives) and one in a different format (DVD / BluRay) data discs.
I’ve been having constant computer crashes on N13 when idle as well. It usually occurs during long exports (45min+). I come back to the login screen, but the file is fully exported, so I’m assuming it crashes when idle.
Haven’t had any issues with files/saves disappearing. I have it set to every 2-min auto-save.
We work on 3 computer here with 3 x Nuendo and have almost no crashes. (Windows)
An automatic backup in Nuendo is created every 15 minutes. I often open a backup if, for example, I notice the next day that the previous version was better.
However, we do “daily” and “timed” data backup on a Synology NAS that automatically makes a backup. And after a night session, I briefly trigger the backup by hand.
And at the same time we still have a hard drive so that we can quickly create a complete copy on an external hard drive before daring experiments.
very sorry about your loss of data. I would like to help but I need to understand what is happening on your computer first. Am I getting this right that you have autosave activated but that all your back up files are nonetheless gone? How large is this project file typically?
