Since I updated to Nuendo 14, I keep getting BSOD’s…and I mean a lot! After booting up the PC, all my Steinberg products are deactivated, with the exception of Nuendo. The Activation Manager starts and asks me to log in and activate my licenses…this happens at least once a day, but usually more often…
Any ideas as to what could be the cause of this are welcome
Did you happen to grab the STOP code data from the BSOD before shutting down? That will point to whatever kernel-mode driver is shutting the system down. If you don’t have it, you can find it in your Windows “System” Event Log.
Thanks for the tip, Thor.
I’ll check it out as soon as I get back from teaching
I went back and looked for the specified data but there is no Event Log in the Windows System folder…
I did a google search and found the event logs…there are a lot of error messages recorded regarding the Bonjour service in relation to Nuendo
Hi, try disabling the bonjour service (type services.msc in start menu run) and see if that helps as a process of elimination.
I already deinstalled it…I’m just booting up the PC and starting Nuendo
fingers crossed then.
Nope …Instant BSOD…
bummer, maybe next is to perhaps look into what hardware drivers you are using with Nuendo do you know how to examine a dump file?

Portcls.sys is related to audio drivers.
Try disabling the windows Audio/Motherboard sound drivers in device manager and just use your ASIO device drivers (presume you are using an ASIO device)
This crash was provoked by my change of audio driver…Nuendo could be opened, but the control room was deactivated…under the studio settings the Steinberg Build-in asio driver was set as audio system…when I changed it to my Apollo Thunderbolt interface the PC crashed immediately
maybe…
Disable all on board audio drivers.
Uninstall Apollo drivers
Check for latest Apollo drivers and install
Maybe Get rid of Nuendo defaults.xml (or start with a clean slate in preferences and copy over what you need from a backup) , let it rebuild
Oh and make sure you disable ‘fast startup in windows’
The cause is clearly my UAD Apollo…it’s a first generation silverface quad…I’ve been using this device for 15 years and never had any problems with it…and suddenly they’re there…
The strange thing is that both Dorico 5 Pro and DaVinci Studio run smoothly with the Apollo
Thanks very much for your ideas and help…I am currently uninstalling the apollo…
This happened after you updated to new drivers?
I’m currently reinstalling the Apollo…with Universal Audio it’s a huge amount of data…it will take a while…
Something is wrong with the interface or the software, because even uninstalling the UA software and the interface showed an error message “uninstallation is not possible, please restart your Apollo”.
Ug, sorry to hear that, man! Re-installing the new drivers will probably write over what you have now and potentially ask for a firmware update during the process.
I’ve got 2 Apollo x8s and an older Twin Quad (TB2) but I’m on MacOS. I don’t think I’ve ever had to fully remove first, but who knows with Windows.
Good vibes your way!
The Apollo is newly installed and runs as usual smoothly and without any problems with any program, be it Dorico, DaVinci, Premiere Pro. I can use the DSP effects of the Apollo without any problems… at the moment Nuendo is now forced to run with an old Steinberg UR 44…I send this audio stream via the Apollo to my Monitors …I can also use the DSP effects within Nuendo without any problems…but as soon as I change the audio driver from the UR 44 asio driver to the Apollo Thunderbolt there is immediately a crash… is this due to the Apollo, or to Nuendo?..that is the big question
