Nuendo and macOS 14 (Sonoma)

“It is a truth universally acknowledged”… that a musician in possession of a Mac must never immediately upgrade to the latest OS version…

Accurate. Apple has, multiple times in the past, completely changed how they do things without warning. There’s no reason to believe they’ll change this behavior, it is just how they are as a company. They do what they want, when they want.

Fair enough, but it means that things WILL break with new versions. They’ll change something before developers have time to react and things will break until they can fix it.

So if you are using it for business, do not upgrade right away. Wait, see if your software is supported, then upgrade.

Good news: I’ve tested and confirmed that interface-rendering problems (e.g. Maximizer) are gone in the current macOS 14.1 dev beta.

This is good news. I’m having the same problem was about revert back to the previous OS, but if the beta is looking good maybe I’ll wait and play around with Ableton until then. Do you have any experience with the average time it takes to go from a dev beta to public release?

A month? (the longest time I can assume.)

(Averagely within 2 weeks.)

Guilty of being curious around Sonoma and not thinking enough about how it might screw up Nuendo. In the past Nuendo was most always ok. Not this time. Currently pondering what to do, it’s been a week since I installed Sonoma and I could use Time Machine but rolling back to a previous OS version? Hmm… could cause more problems than I solve for my whole system.

Well, only if you have a lot of software that requires Sonoma to run. Do you? Otherwise you should be ok, and if Nuendo is something you have to use daily, it is probably best to roll back an OS.

I am a huge fan of late adoption of operating systems.

The graphic failiors are too heavy that you can work with. No Mixer, no file system…(Mac with M1 processor)

same problem on my mac book pro, at least i can see here that it‘s not a problem in my system, so i can stop to search a mistake or reinstallation …. is Steinberg aware of the problem and did they schedule the update–release ?
(i use the macbook with Nuendo Live for live tracking…

To be clear, as they do upon every big OS release Steinberg says this:

What ive noticed on my montery m1 mac is that my cursor jumps to another place when i switch to another application. This has been there since the beginning of my usage of n12 in native mode. I’ve not heard of anyone else having this minor issue, however could this be related to the GUI API issues we see now in Sonoma? Maybe i should make a separate post about it, still thought it was relevant.

Good idea.

Same graphics issues as everyone else on this post. Hopefully this will be remedied soon as the current version is really slowing down the work flow. Sonoma is too nice and fast to revert back but if a fix doesn’t happen soon, I might have to go back to Ventura. It would be a shame if I have to go back to Logic Pro, not that it is an inferior DAW but Nuendo is much better for what I am doing.

Just an FYI for anyone experiencing this issue - I’ve just installed the public beta for MacOS Sonoma 14.1 and it seems to have fixed the graphics issue (at least it has for Nuendo). It’s a tentative hooray at this stage as I haven’t done any extensive testing but it looks as though 14.1 will fix the problem. You can get the beta now easily enough by signing in to Apple Developer with your Apple ID and enabling the ‘Beta Updates’ in settings. Or if you’d rather wait Google suggests 14.1 will get pushed out on the 20th Oct or thereabouts. Stay safe out there kids!

I wouldn’t be surprised. The priority for Apple here is to ship a new OS every year, “ready-or-not hear we come!” (I’m sure their engineers are super-thrilled about it, too. )

Given the yearly round of guaranteed OS-related bugs, I never ever ever upgrade my OS for the first year or so.

It is just seriously good advice not to update until the new OS is stable. Really no need, Steinburg is going to support at least one or two OS’s back. The M2 Macs are still coming with Ventura.

Okay, I’ll buy a Mac Pro soon. Will it come with Ventura? I hope so. I can’t find this information on the Apple website…

Near as I know they always ship the latest OS on their systems.

So, Sonoma. Risky! I hope Steinberg has his eye on this.

The Mac Pro will ship with current OS. You can revert to a previous OS if the machine previously had this OS in the past. For example, the new Mac Pro was launched with Ventura, so even if it ships with Sonoma now, you can roll back to Ventura.
