WARNING: BIG NUENDO SUPPORT, FEATURE AND BUSINESS MODEL COMPLAINT!!!
We get new features in Nuendo 12, 13, 14 etc. with these over effected narrations but no in-depth visual tutorial on how to use them and no step by step use case examples… Steinberg is sitting on the absolute best software but allowing it to be subpar.. I’ve used Cubase since the Atari 1040ST and switched to Logic in the late 90s only to come back to Nuendo because i was doing audio post work… What happened to the dominance? Is Yamaha the problem? Is AVID holding you back with kick backs to not infiltrate the USA market?
Where are the relationships with SSL, ICON, NOISEWORKS, SoundFlow, etc? Why hasnt Yamaha produced a controller on par with AVID’S? Why is Izotope RX ARA support nonexistent? You cant control the playing filed when your market share is dwindling..
Sorry for the rant and im off my soapbox, Nuendo could be so much more of an impact post DAW.
It’s a tough market. A better use of our time would be to get Steinberg to implement Eucon better and then we can just go buy Avid controllers instead. Better than barking up the Steinberg tree for Yamaha controllers that we never know are being worked on in advance and then we have to wait for like 10 years before something comes out. Waste of energy and time. They should finally get on board with reality and update Eucon.
iZotope sucks, regardless of whose fault it is. Divest.
Yamaha? Well I’m not the greatest fan of their stuff. I mean it is all high quality no doubt, but rather transient in execution… there seems to be a lack of ‘commitment’ to their ideas and initiatives. I’m not sure ‘dominance’ is in the Yamaha DNA. They just trundle on…
Now that all hardware has been excised from the Steinberg brand it might give SB an internal motivation to pay attention to other integrations? Whether they will be allowed to by Yamaha another matter.
True to form Yamaha have given up on Nuage ( didn’t see that coming … not), and the latest nod, the little USB controller seems to be limited. So being able to work more effectively with other options would be great.
In terms of Nuendo itself, well I imagine Cubase is the money maker and therefore most resources are poured into that. It’s use-case is usually quite different from Nuendo, so the additional ‘Post’ features get added on later and there’s probably a strict limit on how much time and effort can be spent each year on its development.
Do SB want to dominate the likes of Pro Tools? I doubt it. Their goals, once filtered through Yamaha are probably aimed more at differentiation than what they see as ‘copying’ the competition… even if copying features from here and there would be welcomed by users!
Post Production is traditionally a “high end” trade and ProTools has kept itself in business ( and still does) with very expensive hardware, support contracts etc. It’s a model higher end facilities actually want! Nuendo was the first (?) native, DYI solution … so competing one on one with ProTools has never been a priority IMO.
There’s many basic, practical media-post-production features SB could do much better with, but they would most likely have to be developed for Cubase first and would the Cubase/Music folk even care? To implement them only in Nuendo would seriously diverge the two applications and be very inefficient. So in many ways Nuendo is a little hobbled by Cubase … as I said it makes the money!
All we can do keep lobbying for features we would like to see… and enjoy using the application for what it does offer. Which is a LOT.
I don’t think Eucon has been update in 10 years or more….. Surely with the demise of Nuage this is an opportunity to do this now. It’s pretty good now with the 12 year old code it only needs some updates to get things up to scratch in 2026…. would it really be that hard if Avid have given them the go ahead to have Eucon in Cubase/Nuendo from the start.
I appreciate and respect what you are saying and it appears to be spot on with what I have seen these past several years.
To me it would make more sense if Yamaha sold Steinberg to a company that could make a better use of the power that it has like SSL or Blackmagic. SSL would be the preferred choice because their gear caters to music, broadcast and post.
I’m just trying to spark conversation and and make a little noise because I see the potential in Nuendo.
I’m not that savvy with replying using references so try to follow me, please. lol
I use the comparison of “Absolute best” and “subpar” generally to refer to performance/expectations and its based on opinion. Like Michael Jordan could have been the absolute best in-game dunker over Vince Carter but his execution was subpar. Michel Jordan has the better out of the box specs since his vertical jump was better but we know Vince was the better in-game dunker. whew… spent too much time on that analogy.
Today’s DAW controller MFGs are more than capable of making devices that can compete with Eucon based controllers but they are limited by the amount of flexibility they are allowed by DAW companies. I have been told by SSL that one reason they cannot provide a high level of integration with DAWs is because the VST spec used for SSLs Plugin Mixer (It has channel collor, 8 character names and other features missing from Mackie Control). Steinberg is the creator ov VST and should be able to open it up which would bring down prices for all and allow them to be less relient on AVID… thats a solid business decision that for the life of me I cannot understand why it has not been made other than some non-compete agreement with AVID.
RX Izotope ARA support is not available in Nuendo. There is a statement that it is not supported which goes to one of my points about relationships with third party vendors.
Yes, I agree and I have used the Pro Tools version of Eucon on just the control app and you can do so much more with it. Still i think that if Steinberg bets on Eucon they will leave themselves short in the long run, kind of like right now.
In October 2015 Steinberg made VST 3 spec open source under the MIT license which allows users to “freely use, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell the software”.
Now, I don’t know if this is ‘enough’ to allow deep integration, but it’s a positive step forward from SB!! I’m sure they are hoping other players will pick up the ball! Otherwise why do it?
In my previous diatribe I criticized Yamaha … BUT the corporation is a hydra and deals in engines ( they do a lot of work for Toyota apparently ), motor bikes, marine products and more, so the music tech division is shielded from the rough and tumble of the ‘business’ which has seen the likes of Native Instruments run into trouble. In this respect I’m thankful for Yamaha ownership ! When Steinberg was acquired by Pinnacle decades ago I thought the jig was up! Without Yamaha picking up the company we wouldn’t have Cubendo today.
Having said that, Yamaha are capable of deciding to improve things in a big way when they want. In the past decade their guitars have seen an incredible quality push. We need THAT manager in charge of their audio/music tech!
So here we are. Cubase has been around since 1989… 37 YEARS ago! I was in from the start, following on from Pro 24. Nuendo was released in 2000, on Silicon Graphics computers I think, ( no one could afford that!! ). Now ( almost ) everyone can. So something is working. Job well done.
A big yes to the Hydra comparison lol, definitely a lot of arms all over. They did open up the spec but the problem is there is a ceiling that Cubase and Nuendo operate under from what i was told. I should have said allowed more VST control functionality.
