The piece is in 12/8. In some places, there will be three dotted quarter notes over beats 1-2 & beats 3-4. From my experience, its seems as though Dorico doesn’t quite understand this rhythmic configuration. First, when engaging the triplet tool, it doesn’t know how to deal with creating a triplet on notes that are already triplets. My workaround is to create two dotted quartet notes on Beats 1 & 2, highlight those two notes and implement the tuplet tool. Maybe there’s a better way, but this works. Here’s the issue. Instead of having to create this rhythmic figure via my workaround every time, I’ll instead copy the figure and paste it in the new measure. Then, change the pitches. Most of the time this works. Sometimes, however, the triplet dotted quarter notes over beats 3 & 4, will not show the triplet bracket over the notes. The properties panel doesn’t even recognize the triplets, so there’s no fix there. I’ll need to erase the material in that measure and start over. Sometimes, when the score shows the triplets correctly, the corresponding part will not display it correctly. (see attachment) In this situation, erasing and starting over doesn’t work. Nothing does. Appreciate any help on the matter.
I’m sorry but I’m a little confused by the description of your situation. Perhaps, if my instructions don’t solve your problem, you could go into more detail.
Tuplets are very easy to input. Here’s how I would enter your dotted-crotchet tuplets in 12/8:
- with the duration of a dotted-crotchet selected, simply type ; or open the Tuplet popover and type 3:2 (three dotted-crotchets in the space of two)
- if you don’t already have the duration of a dotted-crotchets selected, you can type 3:2q. into the popover instead.
See below, the result of the popover entry is on beats 3-4:
PS If items are hidden, or not visible, there will usually be a Signpost (if they are switched on) for them that you can select, as if you were clicking on the visible item:
The issue is not about creating tuplets, but instead, fixing the issue of triplet brackets not appearing in some cases. The properties panel doesn’t even recognize the triplets. As the attachments show, when looking at the same measure in the score and part, the score will show the brackets, but in the part, the bracket is missing on one set of triplets.
Perhaps the properties have been changed Locally, in which case it would only change in one Layout:
If you can upload this portion of your project we can take a deeper look at it.
Have you changed the Engraving Options>Tuplets>Repeated Tuplets?
By the way, the Signpost was the fix! Thank you. However, I still don’t know why Dorio is behaving this way. 80% of the time, it’s displaying correctly, whereas the other 20% doesn’t. Perhaps because I’ve copied and pasted some of these tuplets over? Even then, most of these pasted-in measures are displayed correctly.

I’m not sure. I can probably figure it out but I’d need the project. Feel free to PM me.
Maybe not relevant to the problem, but aren’t dotted quarter triplets equal to… regular quarters?
Depends on the meter I guess? In 4/4, yes.
In any meter. In 12/8 this is a simple quarter note hemiola.
Yes, but you didn’t have that notated. I thought you meant compared to what you uploaded, sorry.
You don’t technically need the tuplet in your image.
Have you ever seen a group of 3 dotted quarter note triplets in published music?
Nope. Only in your screenshot.
It’s not mine. I’m not the OP.
@SugarFree, apologies. I’ve gone round the bend. I thought it was odd that you were asking that question!
Never seen it. But I’ve given up trying to second guess the strange notations that some folks want.
Yes I had written a quarter hemiola too and think, that’s the common solution. 12/8 dividet by 6 = 6/4 and every musician can read and play this. What happens to the musician if he reads two Triplets of dotted Quarters? I think the bar is long gone by the time he understands what he is supposed to play.
