Original drum part reverts to duplicate settings

I had a midi drum folder with several tracks and I wanted to adjust the Yamaha RX11 ones to play the sounds of the Roland TD-50x. I duplicated the entire folder, and within it, I started changing the midi numerical assignments so they would trigger the equivalent on the TD-50x. This would involve changing the o-note, i-note and output, so that a kick would still be a kick, snare a snare, etc.
I think I was going back to the original tracks sometimes to compare the differences, but I never changed any settings there. So after having most of the sounds applied right, I went back to the original and now there assignments are all changed and also playing the TD50x. How could this be avoided. this is the 2nd time. the 1st, I thought I might have made changes on the wrong track and started over on a version before any changes and deleted that. Hours spent blown away.

OK, I thought this was because they both had the RX11 drum map. I went to an earlier version and duplicated the folder and then chose GM map which I used for the TD50x. I started changing the outputs and some were already the right sound and I moved all the notes on some that weren’t to the appropriate sound. but then there is a cowbell on the RX11 track and I see that it is on beats 1.2 and 1.4, but there is nothing there on the GM track. I went back and forth several times, played the RS11 track and verified which is the cowbell and then go back to the TD50x and there are no notes on pitch E3 which is unchangeable.
Clueless.
