I’ve read posts about missing page numbers which were solved by turning on the option Page Number in Header. However, a project of mine is still missing some page numbers. I wonder if that might be because these are extra pages I created filled solely with Text Frames (to display the poem used in the music piece and its translation). Is there something I’ve missed?
Does the page template you are using for these pages contain the page number token in the page template header? Often blank pages are just that: blank.
It would be easiest for us to troubleshoot this problem if you could attach the project here, Tiago, and let us know where exactly the problem is occurring (in which layout, and on which page or pages).
I didn’t use a page template for these pages, just added new pages between the others. I’m thinking the problem might indeed have to do with what is considered a Header.
If Derrek’s answer leads to no solution, I will do that.
In order to show the page number, there has to be a text frame that contains the page number token somewhere on the page.
If you haven’t got the page number token on these pages for the poems, then it won’t display.
Sometimes the answer is indeed obvious, but I’ve added the text frames with the page number token from the drop down menu and made sure their content formatting, the constraints and the info in the Properties Panel were precisely the same.
This proves you’ve added some sort of page template (without knowing it), probably the blank one. Then you probably have use Engrave mode to create a 100% overridden page, hence all the “problems” you’re reporting.
The actual Dorico way would be : create a new page template (Poem 1), create a header text frame with the page token and whatever else you want on that header. Create a text frame with your poem exactly as you want it to appear. Make sure you copy that page to the right (or to the left, depending on which page of the double page you’ve been working with).
In Engrave mode top right panel, right click the miniature page where you need this poem to appear and Change page template… Use this new Poem 1 page template (only for this page). You’ll see how this page has been inserted, no red triangles (overrides) appear in the miniatures, and the page numbers are accurate.
Hope it helps!
Thank you, Marc. That is probably it. I’ve never understood exactly how page templates work: I just know enough to get by with my projects. I have no idea how to add a header to a new page template, for example. Fortunately, there are YouTube videos about that subject, so I’ll get informed and come back later if I still need help.
The problem is solved. It came up because of a wrong procedure of mine (as it sometimes happens) and I found the solution by chance, while following a Dorico video made with an earlier version of Dorico.
When you are editing the contents of a text frame there is a drop-down menu to choose a paragraph: I was convinced that I would get the page token if I selected Page (why wouldn’t I?) from that menu. Since the frame is very small, I wasn’t surprised not to see the token before I closed the frame, only surprised that the number didn’t display after I closed the frame.
I still want to learn more about Page Templates, though, especially how to save them and save changes to existing ones. I made my own Page Template Set, but I am confused with editing, naming, saving and loading the Set and the Templates themselves.
And thank you to everyone who tried to help: it was very appreciated.
