Page Templates, Layouts & Continued Confusion

Okay, just wanted to start over here. I made some definite progress, fixed up my Full Score the way I want it, created a nice new Layout. Had some issues creating new projects with the saved Project template (text frames not where I had left them, etc), but more or less got what I wanted. Sort of.

The genesis flow only had ONE empty bar. I know I saw some dialog somewhere that let me create a new flow with a predefined number of bars, but, honestly, there are so many dialogs and procedures, I can’t find my way back to. I added some bars (I hate that empty bar look; it’s like begging me to have writers’s block ). Then for grins, I created another flow.

  1. It did not look like I expected. I had expected (well, wanted… I really didn’t know what to expect) a repeat of the very first page, with flow title nice and large, composer, lyricist, copyright, etc.
  2. And of course, no bars.
I’ve attached a picture, and the project file.

Is there a tutorial somewhere that walks you through layouts, page templates and page template sets step by step? Coming to this forum with such elementary questions is embarrassing and likely feels like a drag for experienced users.

While I am here, I would like to report what appears to me to be a certain “fragility” in the app. On many occasions in my brief time with Dorico, it will just freeze up. Sometimes I’m merely going to a click a menu item; that is, not necessarily trying anything like heavy lifting. My mouse cursor just starts spinning, and no response. I shut it down, and inevitably when I try to run it again, the first time it runs, it cannot connect to the audio engine. I’m just using HP’s Realtek onboard sound (so far). I’ve used an external USB SB in the past, but decided with Dorico to keep everything as simple as possible.

I was going to download the just announced upgrade, but noticed a wave of crash reports in this forum, so I think I’ll just wait and join the second wave on that.

Anyway, that’s my topic(s) du jour.

By default only the first flow in the layout uses the First page template design. Subsequent flows just carry on using the Default page template, with the option to show flow headings wherever the flow begins (as flows can start halfway down a page, if you want).

To make sure all flows in your layout use the First page template, change this option:

Don’t feel worried about asking anything – that’s what the forum is for!

For a tutorial set focussed on page templates, you could watch through this playlist – it uses the older term “master page”, which was renamed to “page template” more recently, but the fundamentals are still the same.

John Barron also did a great Discover Dorico session on things like title pages, here:

That’ll be the Hub:

On these occasions it’s best to do Help>Create Diagnostic Report which will create a zip file on your desktop called Dorico Diagnostics. Upload that file here and one of the Dev Team will be able to see if something in your setup is causing the problem.
