Parallel processing

I am a noob to Cubase, trying to find a way to do this:

  1. do parallel compression on multiple drum tracks (snare, kick, toms, overheads),
  2. AND be able to control the amount of a drum signal going to it (as in 100% snare/kick, little bit of OH, etc)
  3. AND monitor the output of that compressor by itself so I can hear what it’s doing without the original track mixed in.

I tried using Sends to an FX channel, which allows the 2nd part… but I can’t get it to do the 3rd part, if I solo that channel it solos all the drum tracks… if I turn off any drum track it also disappears out of the compression channel.

I tried using groups / Direct outs, but then it sends 100% of every channel to that group.

I’m using Cubase 10 Pro. I’m sure this has probably been asked & answered, but I can’t find it anywhere. Probably because I’m not sure what words to use to get it to show up in search results.

Have you tried using the Listen function from the control room?
Instead of (S)olo use (L)isten. Or pull up and down the faders of the group channel you want to hear.
