Hello,
One common task for orchestration is the need to copy everything except notes and paste elsewhere. I was in a Zoom session the other night where it was discussed where film score orchestration should move with Finale ending and this topic came up.
Currently it is possible to do this by doing a copy and paste with a deselect filter for notes, but copy and pasting articulations requires a separate pass where you select the passage again to copy the notes and then paste the articulations to the destination. If you have to do this a lot, these two separate passes each time increases the likelihood of errors and increases the amount of time this takes.
It would be nice if there was a way to do this in one go. Perhaps something like a “Paste Filter” which would open a dialog box and allow you to select what you wanted to paste of the copied region, which could then include articulations.
I understand the request, but I am curious about the situation where you have already entered the notes, but with no markings. Normally I copy a whole passage and just repitch. Perhaps you are importing MIDI which comes through with all the notes and no markings?
That’s correct, it’s from a MIDI import. Standard process for film score orchestration.
The common scenario is you are taking MIDI lines written by the composer and you mark up one line with dynamics/articulations/techniques, and there’s another line in the same rhythm with different notes that you want to mark up in the same way, with the same dynamics/articulations/techniques.
We do at least have a Paste Articulations command, which pastes slurs and articulations, but you would still need to copy other non-note items using a separate paste command.
Right - that’s what I explained in the first post, the process currently takes two passes, it would be nice to be able to get that down to one. Having a paste articulations is certainly a huge improvement for the process, but there’s still that small issue.
This two step process had been described on the call as one of the issues. They were comparing the workflow of Sibelius and Dorico specifically as it pertains to film score orchestration in LA.
