Paste not overriding what's there

I am working with Dorico 5.1. This seems like a simple question, but when I copy and paste from one staff to another, it simply adds it to the bar - I am wanting it to copy and delete what was there before. I can’t seem to find that setting anywhere. Please help.

Make sure you do not have Chord mode (Q) activated. Chord mode is additive.

Chord mode is not selected.

Then I don’t see how that is possible.

Just to clarify - chord mode is selected then the stack of notes on the left side is selected - correct?

Chord mode…
chord

If chord mode is switched on, then whatever you paste will be added to whatever is already there.

I am certain it is not selected. Just restarted the program. Still adding music on top of what is there.

Here is the before - copying onto the Guitar Part. As you can see Chords is not highlighted on the left.

I am copying notes from here:

And this is what it looks like after pasting

I am noticing it seems to only be happening when I am placing notes over a part that has rhythmic notation. Could that play into it?

Thanks Janus.

It’s simple: The slash notation is a different voice, so pasting the notes doesn’t clobber it. You can delete them either before (easier), or even after.

I also get this in general.
Example, string quartet: copy from violin 1 with notation to violin 2 with notation, hoping to overwrite it. Chord mode off.
The copied notation gets added to the existing one in violin 2, it doesn’t replace it.
I always have to delete existing notation to copy-paste something into it.

Hi. I know what you’re saying. When it happens to me I just undo and alt-click the selection where I just had pasted it. Alt-clicking does replace the existing music while pasting is much more forgiving with the existing bits. My 2c.

Thanks Mark -
That seems to be the case.

Alt Click the music you are copying, or alt click the music you are replacing?

I get the same result as Wayne, equally with both Copy/Paste and Alt-click.

Curiouser and curiouser…whether I straight-up CMD + C / Vcopy/paste or select OPT + click I am able to replace the existing music with what’s being copied.

Do the Preferences > Note Editing settings have anything to do with the differences we’re seeing in this behavior?

I deleted everything in the staff and re-copied everything from the Finale XML file that I had again. On PC - I was CNTRL - C and CNTRL-V.

I’ll have to try on another one to see what happens.
