Pattern Library in Dorico

Hi there
Few days ago I had an idea and I’m really curious about your thoughts on it.

So whenever I write something in dorico rhythmically I do it in patterns (quarter quarter eights eights eights eights) - you know what I mean. So I thought, that I’d be much faster in entering new notes by choosing a fitting pattern of let’s say, 4x 16ths and a quarter, than having to switch between the lengths. Especially when there is some pattern repetition.

So my concrete idea would be, that in the control panels on the bottom (cmd 8), you have another option where you could choose patterns. Either you choose from an existing library, you can create your own, or you edit existing ones. And here we could go much further. Imagine to add already articulations, dynamics, maybe even pitch (so you could just move the notes up and down in the score, but the intervals would fit already) in the pattern you choose. So you would have two kind of use cases of this function. One, you choose the pattern and similar to the orange markings in the score when you enter notes, you see the length of the note within the pattern and then write the notes. Two, you immediately write (or copy) the pattern to the chosen part in your music.

I hope my idea is more or less understandable. Please feel free to ask if something isn’t clear yet - and please let me know what you think about it. I’d love to see something like this especially when I work on full scores.

Thanks and all the best
Cédric (alias FollowScore)

Have you explored Lock Duration?

yes. this could work really well together with my idea. The point for me is more, that I have repeated patterns over and over again in a big project. Of course I could jump around and copy and paste all day long, but I’d prefer to have it in one place.
