Percussion instruments automatically mis-numbered

I’ve gotten a good handle on creating/editing/laying out fresh Dorico projects, but I know that I’ll continue to receive Finale files into the future, so I’m doing trial runs of importing MusicXML into Dorico.

My process has been to import the XML file, save it as “[project]-fresh-xml.dorico” and then copy-and-paste each staff to the destination file, one movement at a time. There’s obviously a lot of resetting and clearing of extraneous stuff that is involved. If there’s a better best-practice, I’d love to hear it, because it may just be faster for me to re-enter the music by hand at this point.

My challenge in the attached file, though, is that the percussion instruments are being mis-numbered. I actually don’t need them numbered at all, but at the very least avoiding “Cr. Cym 3” when only two percussionists are playing the crash would be ideal.

I’ve played with adding spaces to the front of the instrument names, and while that fixes the staff naming issue, it adds additional spaces to every instrument change indication, which looks weird.

I’m probably missing a very obvious setting somewhere.

Also, if there’s an elegant way to change the staff names to indicate
Perc. 1
Tri.

…that would be the ideal option for me.

Thank you!!

I’m not at my computer but do you have a Drum Kit in your project?

Yes, it’s for pops orchestra. Sorry, should have indicated that. 2 percussion and a drummer.

That’s likely the source of the numbering issue as the default drum kit will contain a crash cymbal. If it appears in the score above the other two crash cymbals, it will be counted as “Cr. Cym 1” in the kit.

Yes.

Because one of the instruments in the drum kit is a Crash Cymbol, the others will be auto-numbered etc.

I got around this by creating a new Crash and renaming it something appropriate. I use this on in my Drum Kit.

I don’t see what you’re referring to here …?

Sorry - reverse that.

I use the Crash Cymbal (High) in my Kit (default, I think) and Crash Cymbal (Low) in my Percussion player as my “orchestral crash cymbals”. I have custom VSTs set up for both.
