Has anyone created a percussion map for a conga? I’ve tried but for I can’t get one to work.
Which sample library are you using? Obviously the techniques available will depend on what’s in that particular library. Perhaps someone will have already have done it if you tell us which one you are using.
Well Halion sonic has them an so does garritan but I’ve not managed to get them to work at all
Percussion mapping can be pretty confusing if you haven’t done it before. Have you watched any of the Dorico YouTube videos on this topic? Like this or this?
There are a ton of different manufacturers that make conga VSTs and obviously their maps are not compatible. Here’s a little test file I was using back when I made a map for the VSL Congas, so it’s certainly possible to get them working in Dorico.
Once you’ve chosen what library you are going to use, look at the documentation to see what MIDI #s correspond to what techniques in the library. You’ll need to create Playback Techniques (not Playing techniques) for any of these that aren’t default techniques in Dorico. The Playback Techniques are what connects the notation, as defined in Percussion Instrument Playing Techniques, to the playback in your sample player as defined by your Percussion Map.
In that VSL example above, I have the Instrument Playing Techniques defined like this …
… and then these techniques and instruments assigned in the Percussion Map, which then points the notated technique to the correct sound in the sample library. Of course all the routing has to be correct too:
At what point in the process are you getting hung up?
Not what you were asking, but as another alternative, with the new MIDI Trigger function it’s really easy to trigger a Conga sample right within Dorico too. Ever since D4.x starting transmitting tempo data, I sort of gave up notating it anyway, and mostly just use samples now. An actual conguero is gonna play something way more hip than what I’ll write, so I’ll give a part with a roadmap and important hits, and then just use a sample if I need playback. Here’s a simple example that triggers 2 samples in the SA! Bongos & Congas library.
Thanks for the all the info. I will let you know how I get on. Might get those SA congas
