Piece for 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, piano, and harp

Hi everyone, this is a piece I put together based on submission requirements for a festival. It’s a small ensemble with 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, a piano, and a harp.

For those who might be following me, it is based on a short orchestral piece I put up a while ago, called Susie in Heaven, so you might recognize parts of it.

Based on the festival requirements, I reduced the orchestral score to the instruments offered, and I added new musical content to make it longer and more interesting.

I’m using Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra first chair for most of the tracks, but I wasn’t happy with the legatos. For those I used 8Dio solo instruments, which, to my ear, sounded better.

Happy to hear your comments.

Very interesting musical writing, excellent development. This is a very good achievement.

Bravo!

Hi Leon,

Great piece of music!
I think you made the most of the limited ensemble, the arrangement sounds fresh and interesting.

Cheers,
Wim

Thanks for listening, Rene and Wim.

For anyone interested, I made the score for this using the score editor in Cubase 14. It’s a major improvement over the old score editor. Still has a few bugs and functions missing, but I was largely able to get around them. It is so convenient to have the midi and the score integrated in one piece of software, so that you can change the midi and it changes the score automatically.
