Play/record from cycle region

Hi there,

Apologies if this has been asked before - I have done plenty of searching online but i can’t seem to find the answer.

I’m coming from Logic / Pro Tools (although always Logic for music). I’m very used to the program playing and recording from the start of a cycle range when the cycle range is active. Cubase doesn’t seem to do this - but i can’t seem to find a way to change the behaviour of “Play”. I would expect to right click on the play transport to change its behaviour or similar.

For some context - today I’ve been recording my piano, so running back and forth between the computer and piano is annoying. On Logic i would set a cycle range, then use my ipad at the piano to just restart playback to when i make a mistake (i.e start recording again from the start of the cycle range).

I’ve got Eucon setup on the ipad, as it appears the Cubase app isn’t well liked (plus it costs money - i’m still trialling this app).

I’ve found that i can play from cycle range by pressing Num + (which is useful), but that can’t seem to be done obviously on my ipad. I would love to simply be able to change the behaviour of the default play setting. I thought perhaps the “range selection” feature might do this, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference (in fact i haven’t worked out how its different from cycle yet).

Again, apologies for a perhaps silly question - I know part of learning new software is learning to work with the way its designed, rather than agaisnt the grain/trying to force Cubase to BE logic.

Any thoughts would be very welcome! Or perhaps - how do other solo artists easily jump around their studio and record without having to run back to the desk constantly to reset the locator. I’d rather not wait for the cycle to loop if i’ve made a mistake in the second bar!

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Transport > Start Mode > Start from Cycle Start.

Or you can make a Macro (and assign a Key Command):

  • Go to Left locator
  • Start

Thanks Martin! I’ll give this a pop!

Worth adding (although I haven’t spent any time looking at this yet, but i noticed you commented on something else similar) - is it difficult to make this macro work in Eucon (i.e so i can use it on my ipad)? Perhaps a soft key?

Ofc perhaps I just need to read up on the latter.

Thanks!

Hi,

You can make this Macro in Cubase and assign a Key Command. Then you can fire this Key Command from EuCon.

On a side note: You might also be interested in Cubase’s “re-recording mode”.

Thanks for the replies all. Johnny - I think the re-recording mode doesn’t save the last take (although I may be wrong there), so I didn’t end up using that. It seems to discard the take, although maybe there’s an option to disable.

For anyone else viewing this thread later. I ended up enabling “start recording at left locator/punch in position” under the Transport > Common Recording Modes pulldown menu at the top bar. That allowed me to just stop and record again and Cubase automatically starts from the cycle range. Very useful and doesn’t require anything extra to be done to work via Eucon / iPad etc.

Problem solved - thanks all!

You are correct. That’s the whole point of re-recording mode. Discard a bad take and immediately start a new one.
If you want to keep previous takes than please don’t use this mode.
