Playback Anomalies

Wow! Having a really weird time with playback.

It’s a piano piece, I began to add dynamics and tempo markings and it was sounding ok, then suddenly, in a section with a repeated crotchet chord accompaniment, Dorico suddenly plays some chords louder, then quieter, does a decrescendo where there isn’t one etc…sounds awful. I thought I’d make peace with marking it up so it sounds ok but would look ridiculous to a player, but that didn’t work either.

I’ve tried re-writing the affected parts but it makes no difference.

Has anyone else experience of this? was there a solution?

Thank you

You could try experimenting with the options on the Dynamics page of Library > Playback Options. Try disabling pitch contour emphasis and/or polyphonic voice balancing and see if that helps.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

Disabling the pitch contour emphasis made no difference, disabling voice balancing had the chord accompaniment fff no matter the dynamic written, and when disabling them both it responded the same as just disabling the voice balancing.

I’ve turned them both back on and I’m left with chords sticking out and no adherence to dynamic markings and what’s also weird is that if I continue the piece in playback to where I’d not yet attempted any dynamic markings it reverts to “normal” ie playing at an even tempo, no sticking out chords, it’s as if the dynamics I had written, but then changed but it sounded unsatisfactory, have remained in the memory somehow…?

Are you able to attach the project here? Perhaps you could cut it down to just the affected bars and then attach that version here. It’s much easier to diagnose these kinds of things if we can look at the project itself.

Fantastic, thank you I’d love to, could you advise how best to do that please?

See this:

Thank you Christian, I am hesitating about reapplying the default playback template as its’ in playback that the trouble manifests…

Then try to upload the cut down project with its original playback configuration, if the resulting file size is not bigger than 4MB. Otherwise you could upload your file to a cloud service and post here just the link to it.

Did it anyway and it remained the same!

Thank you!

Hi,

Here’s the project, thank you

You just can’t tell - Trouble shooting.dorico (1023.3 KB)

Sound ok here with Noteperformer, I think. (nice piece) Don’t have any other Libraries. You might want to enable Independent Voice Playback in the left panel in Play mode.

I’m confused, and this may not be the source of your problem, but your playback is set to use “HALion”, where it should be “HALion Sonic”. (HALion requires a different paid licence). Did you install the correct Sound Libraries with Dorico?

That aside, I reapply the Dorico Auto Playback Template and everything plays correctly.

Thank you, I’ll look into Noteperformer, I enabled the Independent Voice Playback and it didn’t make any difference sadly…

Your score plays back perfectly with standard Dorico.
Perhaps you could upload your diagnostics so someone from the team can see your sound setup
(Do Help>Create Diagnostic report and upload the zip file that appears on your desktop)

I’m rather embarrassed to say “I don’t know know” to your question of whether I installed the correct sound libraries, I’m not actually aware of installing any…

I have purchased Halion 7 but whether that’s what you’re referring to I don’t know.

I found the Auto Playback Template and see this, I changed it to the first setting, Halion Sonic, and the anomalies remained, could you say what the Dorico Auto Playback Template is please? thank you

Oh, how confusing.

I’ve tried to attach the diagnostics report and it says it’s too big, I’ve tried the suggestion earlier as to how to reduce the size but it didn’t make any difference, do you know what I could try next?!

OK. No problem. This might be heading down a rabbit hole, but…

In your Edit>Preferences>Play… you should probably set your preferred VST to Halion Sonic (not Best available)…

This will ensure the standard playback templates load correctly.

Thank you, I’ve done that but the problem persists.

This is so confusing, that it is playing correctly for you.

I’ve tried to include the diagnostics here but am told the file is too big, can anyone suggest how I can make it smaller please?

Did you close Dorico after you changed the preferences?

I did, but I did it again and then quit but the it’s the same.

The problem is in bar:

36 - suddenly very quiet

38/39 - accents on the melody

then it continues loud

44 - suddenly quiet

45 - suddenly loud

47 - “normal”

48 first 3 crotchet normal, 4th loud

50 - first crotchet loud

and then there were other examples randomly placed elsewhere in the piece.

Doesn’t that occur when you play it?
