Playback cursor does not snap to grid when 'Locate when Clicked in Empty Epace' is enabled

The playback cursor does not snap to grid according to its setup when ‘Locate when Clicked in Empty Space is enabled’ and mouse is clicked in an empty space.

How to reproduce:

  1. Click ‘Edit’ → ‘Preferences’ → ‘Transport’ and enable ‘Locate when Clicked in Empty Space’ checkbox
  2. If not enabled, enable grid snapping by clicking on the ‘Snap’ button or pressing the key J
  3. Click left mouse button on any are inside the track view
→ Result: playback cursor moves to the exact place where mouse button was pressed
→ Expected result: playback cursor snaps to the closest grid line according to the grid snap setting

Platform:
Cubase 11.0.20 Build 371
Windows 10 Pro 10.0.18363 Build 18363

Hi,

It works like this since ever. It works as specified. The Snap is applied when you click to the Ruler area only.

Then it begs the question “why?”

Does having it work differently with regards to snap when done from the ruler or the track area have some benefit, or is being consistently inconsistent just a thing with Cubase?

If you hold SHIFT + ALT while left clicking, it snaps to grid.
Still its a hassle, why isn’t this fixed yet?

As you can see from the reply, it works as intended, which seems to be the answer for pretty much all of its neat little quirks and problems.

Agree this should follow the ‘snap on/off’ setting.

Is this fixed yet? It’s almost as if nobody is using the “Locate when Clicked in Empty Space” option.

Personally, the way it works is how I would like it, because it places the cursor exactly where I asked.

So it’s not broken. Make a feature request if you would like it to change.

The benefit (to me) is that there are two options available without resorting to changing a preference.

This is a good hint, but it’s not enabled by default (at least in Cubase 13). You need to go to Settings → Tool Modifiers → Select Tool and add a modifier for Set Cursor Position

Settings? Where is that?

Hi,

On Mac it’s Apple logo > Settings. On Windows it’s Edit > Preferences.

Thanks. Got it now.

thanks

Yet another “bug” that turns out to be a design choice by the devs. Why? Ask the devs.
It is what it is - Cubase.

Thank you

I added ctrl as the modifier, and now, it is even better than I expected. Now when I ctrl+click anywhere in the project window, the cursor comes there by snapping to grid irrespective of if it was an empty space or not!

For clarity in this long thread:

When a modifier key is is used to set cursor position it snaps to the grid. It does not matter which modifier key you choose.

When the preference Locate when clicked in Empty Space is active, clicking without using a modifier key sets the cursor position, and does not snap to the grid
