In swing time (light or medium 8ths, for example), the lengthened duration of the notes under a slur creates a curious effect as one note overlaps with the next:
Adjusting the duration of legato notes under a slur (Library - Playback options) appears to have no effect, even if the % duration is reduced to 50%.
As notes in the play window do not appear to overlap, how is it possible to control the duration of notes, ideally in a single instrument as opposed to a project wide setting?:
Hi @rraby, which Playback Template/Library are you using?
Here is what I have using Iconica Sketch, HSO, HALion Sonic Sel., Olympus, GASE Playback Template:
…and here with Note Performer PT:
In both my rendition the overlapping notes thing is not so present (especially with NP) as in your audio example.
Which Expression map are you using? (dependent on the used Playback Template): possibly you have Playback Overrides in the Expression map, that you need to change there (instead of the overridden Playback Options from the Library menu)
Your screenshot shows the Notated Durations. You can switch to show the Played Durations, and besides seeing the effect of the swing, you can shorten the notes note by note, if needed:
Thank you for your comprehensive response. There is much I need to ponder!
I am using NotePerformer with various playback engines, but the trumpet is plain Noteperformer. The Playback Overrides in the Expression Map match my Library - Playback Options:
I hadn’t previously explored Played Durations - thanks for bringing this to my attention. The durations seem to reflect swing time and do not appear to overlap, but perhaps I am misinterpreting the grid?
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, and thank you again for your help early on.
I’ve encountered something quite puzzling in the project I’m currently working on. Interestingly, when I replicate the exact same phrases in a new project, everything functions as expected. This suggests the issue may be flow specific.
After discussing with Daniel, it seems the problem could be related to a combination of articulations when swing playback is enabled. There might be other contributing factors as well. For instance, Dorico wasn’t recognising swing indication until I suppressed a tempo equation, based on Daniel’s suggestion.
It seems this might be a nuanced playback issue, and I hope the team will have an opportunity to investigate it further in due course.
