Hello,
I’m using Dorico Pro v5.1.0 and I’m having the following issue with respect to the playback of measured tremolo in sections where the tempo is varying.
I have 2 bars with 8th of notes with measured tremolo, single dashed.
On the first half of the second bar, the tempo is set to slightly decrease gradually.
The playback of the mesured tremolo is fine (2 notes per 8th of notes), except when the tempo is varying, even in the most slightly manner (4 notes per 8th of notes).
The playback problem can be confirmed with MidiMonitor.
Are you aware of this problem which seems to be a bug ?

Yes, we’re aware of this issue.
For measured tremolos (i.e. where the tremolo slashes represent a specific subdivision of the written note in a kind of musical shorthand, as opposed to an unmeasured tremolo, where the note is subdividied into as many short repetitions as possible to produce a special effect with high tension), Dorico will play the notes as if they were written out in their longhand durations, and those notes will slow down or speed up according to the tempo change.
For unmeasured tremolos, Dorico will try to maintain the effective speed for the repeated notes, so that they sound at a constant speed as the tempo changes. This doesn’t always work brilliantly well at the moment, and we plan to change this in future updates.

Thanks Daniel for taking the time to answer my message.
I’m afraid I did not make myself understood properly (or I did not understand your answer correctly !)
My point is that measured tremolos are indeed played as if they were written out in their longhand durations, as long as the tempo doesn’t change. As soon as the tempo is changing, following a ramp variation (gradual variation), a slope, even the smallest one, and only during the slope, then, the measured tremolos are not played as their longhand durations anymore, but rather, possibly unmeasured tremolos. As soon as the tempo becomes flat again, then the measured tremolos are played according to their longhand durations again, as expected.
In other words, as an example, when the tempo is changing from 100% to 99% during 2 beats and along a slope, then, during these 2 beats, the measured tremolos are not played as their longhand durations, but rather, as what sounds like unmeasured tremolos, which is very odd.
Please try this again in the next Dorico 5 update when it arrives, and then let me know if you still encounter the problem. If you do, please attach a minimal example (just one instrument, and a bar or two), and I’ll be pleased to take a look.
Hi Daniel,
I just noticed there was a new release of Dorico (5.1.21, released Feb 22 2024), only now…
Tested the issue : it now works perfectly in this context.
Thanks !
