Player Assignment by Flow Not Saving

I’m working with a large choral/symphonic score with multiple changes of transposing instruments. For the opening flow, the Horns are in Eb. Beginning with flow 2, the Horns change to F. When I select the horn players in flow 1 as Eb and then select the horn players in flow 2 as F, when I return to flow 1, the horn players have changed to F. And when I correct flow 1 to Eb, the horns in flow 2 change to Eb as well. Is there something I’m doing incorrectly which causes this problem?

It sounds like you have players who are only holding one horn, and you’re changing it between F and Eb. This will affect all of the music for that player.

What you want to do, in Setup mode, is give each player two instruments: horn in F and horn in Eb.

In Write mode, in Galley view, you’ll see both staves, and you can put the music for each flow in the correct staff. Then when you switch to Page view, or Engrave mode, you’ll see that Dorico shows you only the correct horn for each flow (assuming that you have allowed instrument changes in Layout Options).

Dear Aaron:

Thanks very much for this - your process worked as needed for horns, clarinets and trumpets. I’m still having a problem, however, with solo instruments (cor angles) and vocal soloists. If I select the cor anglais for the opening flow and then deselect it for the subsequent flow, I lose it in the opening flow. Same for vocal soloists. I have 11 flows and the way it’s currently working, if I select a player, it shows up in all 11 flows.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like you’re not quite doing the right thing in Setup mode, Dave. Make sure you select the single cor anglais player in the Players panel so it is brightly selected, and the flows in which it appears are highlighted in a more muted blue, and show checkboxes in the corner of each card in the Flows panel. To remove the cor anglais player from the flow, uncheck the checkbox for that flow, being careful not to click anywhere else so the selection changes.

Daniel:

You are correct - I wasn’t doing the right thing. I now understand and all is well - many thanks for your help.
