Please allow changing the trill interval when selecting multiple trills!

Hello,

Currently, changing the trill interval is only allowed when selecting a single trill.
Please allow changing the trill interval when selecting multiple trills!

Thanks in advance!

Yes please!
This is especially annoying when one needs to fix timpani rolls on the note E or B which automatically gets a sharp.

Dorico disallows this at the moment because the values that can be set in the Interval control in Properties takes into account the pitch of the note at the trill’s position, so when you have multiple notes selected, the allowed set of intervals could be contradictory. Perhaps we could one day figure out whether all the notes at the selected trill positions are all the same, in which case we could then show the control. But I’m not sure when we would be able to work on this.

I assume what Dorico does is thinking diatonically, following key signatures, tuning, etc…
If that is the case, a conceptually simpler solution could be to allow the application of a chromatic mindset so that all trills in a specific region or instrument or flow (or else) could be set to be 1/2 step.
This is often required in contemporary music and having to change each one of them manually could make Dorico impractical for those projects before even starting.

Surely you a lot of evidence to back up this assertion (eg proportion of trills of each step)?

Again, some evidence would be welcome (eg ratio of trills to non trills)

That said, it is trivially simple to select a 1/2 step trill and alt-click it wherever needed.

I understand that generalisation may cause allergic reactions so, being unable to make a comprehensive list of every single piece composed since the 1920s that I have seen requiring this, I will mention my personal experience with a single composer (12 years, 30+ pieces) whose trills were always half steps. For any other interval he would use the small note next to the main one.
In atonal contexts one either has to assume everything is diatonic or that every trill needs a specification. In that case, from an engraver pov, being able to select multiple instances of a trill and change the interval would greatly help.
I’m not sure about the alt-clicking, since the trill length may not adapt to the destination note.

Do you have any reason why you would like the current behaviour to be kept unchanged?

I don’t think that is standard, but I may be wrong.

Try it and see.

Most people do not write atonal music (even today).

I don’t have an opinion on whether, under atonal key signature, trills should default to major or minor 2nd.

Yes! This. I find the trill interval logic to be very cumbersome in Dorico – switching to a chromatic system, where trills are just specified in terms of number of semitones, would be much better. At least if the interval is actually shown. In diatonic music the interval is usually not shown anyway. if it fits the key sig.
